The strange lure of the tropics. The romance of the jungle. Once they get under your skin, they never leave you. They get you. And they sure got me.
[on Singapore] The harbor was full of native boats, and the air was full of native smells.
I was beginning to get impatient. At the same time, I had to smile to myself; here I'd been weeks on the water and was expecting Ali to be on time to the minute. It just shows you. I had every confidence in Ali. He'd been my right-hand man on many previous trips to the Malay country — and even though his body was brown, he was pure white inside. By a lucky break, I had once cured him of jungle fever. And even I did not think as much of myself as he thought of me. Good old Ali! I was sure glad to see him.
