Irena's Vow (film)

Irena's Vow is a 2023 war drama film about a Polish nurse who helped to shelter and protect Jewish people during the Holocaust by hiding them in the cellar of the home where she was employed as a housekeeper by a German Army officer. Directed by Louise Archambault. Written by Dan Gordon, based on his play. Irena Gut Opdyke What does it matter who we are? What we do is who we are. Dialogue [Waffen-SS troops arrive, led by a Hauptsturmführer, suspicious Jews are hiding in the house] Hauptsturmführer: Open the door now, or I'll break it down! [Irena opens the front door] Why the hell don't you open the door when an SS officer tells you to? Are you deaf?! Irena: I'm sorry; I was washing my hair and I didn't hear you ring. Hauptsturmführer: Out of my way. [Inside the kitchen] Hauptsturmführer: How many people live in this house? Irena: Uh, just two. [The Hauptsturmführer indicates the stack of dishes in the kitchen sink] Hauptsturmführer: Quite a lot of dishes for two people, wouldn't you say? Irena: The Major had a small gathering here last night, with Sturmbannführer Rokita. Hauptsturmführer: The Major? Irena: Major Eduard Rugemer. This is his house. If you want to search, you might need to get permission from him. [Back outside soon after, a visibly-furious Major Rugemer arrives in his staff car] Hauptsturmführer: [to his men] No one leaves this house, you understand? No one! Major Rugemer: Who is the imbecilic moron who is in charge here? Is it you?! Stand at attention when a superior officer talks to you, insolent young swine! You dare to accuse me of hiding Jews in my own house? Hauptsturmführer: I'm sorry, sir, we didn't know- Major Rugemer: No, you didn't! Get out of here, and go find your Jews!
