Jean de Schelandre (c.1585 – 18 October 1635), Seigneur de Saumazènes, was a French poet. The tragedy Tyr et Sidon, ou les funestes amours de Belcar et Méliane was published in 1608 under the anagram-name Daniel d'Anchéres, and reprinted with numerous changes in 1628 under the author's own name. Quotes C'est un faible roseau que la prospérité. Prosperity is a feeble reed. Phulter, in Tyr et Sidon (1608, rev. 1628) act 5, sc. 7. Reported in Craufurd Tait Ramage's Beautiful Thoughts from French and Italian Authors (Liverpool: Edward Howell, 1866) p. 1. Note: Jules Haraszti's edition of the play has 'foible' not 'faible' (Paris: Édouard Cornély et Cie, 1908) p. 167. Compare: Seneca, Ep. 98: "Fragilibus innititur, qui adventitio lætus est. "He leans on a feeble reed who takes pleasure in what is external to himself." External links Category:1635 deaths Category:Poets from France Category:Playwrights from France
