Trying to Get to Heaven Before They Close the Door [2.01]
Rue: [V.O.] Fezco's grandma was a motherfuckin' G. And even though she wasn't like, the best guardian... she taught him everything he knew about life. He didn't really know much about his mom. His grandma never really liked to talk about her, except to occasionally say...
Marie: [to young Fez] Your mom had a pure heart. But your daddy always took advantage of that. Let me tell you somethin', Snowflake. There's a short supply of kindness in this world. People sniff it out... and they swoop right the fuck in. Don't ever fall in love. It's the one instinct you can't trust.
Fezco: Yo, you Rue's friend, right?
Lexi: Yeah, since preschool. Sorry, I don't know why I said that.
Fezco: Nah, you good. You met where you met. Yo, what was your name again?
Lexi: Lexi.
Fezco: Lexi... I like that. That's a nice name.
Lexi: Thanks.
Fezco: So did you, like, have a good Christmas, or are you Jewish or somethin'?
Lexi: Yeah, well, my mom's Jewish, but she always says, "If the Christians can steal Christmas from the pagans, then the Jews can also."
Fezco: You say the Christians stole Christmas?
Lexi: Well, in order to convert the Germanic pagans who, like, celebrated winter solstice and stuff, the Christians were like, "Fuck it. Let's just say Jesus was born this day, and you can hang tinsel and stuff."
Fezco: How you just go and change the man's birthday?
Lexi: Well, in the same way King James was rewriting the Bible on one side of the castle, and had witches trying to turn his pee into gold on the other.
Fezco: Yo, how the fuck do you know all this?
Lexi: I don't know, by reading.
Fezco: Do you, like, not believe in God? [Lexi shakes her head] Damn, Lexi... You fuckin' fearless.
Lexi: Thanks. Do you believe in God?
Fezco: Hell yeah, I believe in God.
Lexi: Like, there's a man sitting in the clouds... judging all of your actions and stuff?
Fezco: Hell yeah.
Lexi: Can I ask you a personal question?
Fezco: What's up?
Lexi: How do you justify dealing drugs, then?
Fezco: Well, I mean, my Uncle Carl got diabetes from eatin' too much McDonald's. You don't see nobody goin' after they ass.
Lexi: Yeah, but if I were God, I don't know if I'd let McDonald's CEO in Heaven. I'd be like, "Fuck that guy."
Fezco: Yeah, that's a good point. I have to get back to you on that one.
[Nate and Cassie are having sex in the bathroom when Maddy knocks on the door]
Nate: I'm using the fucking bathroom!
Maddy: Nate?
Nate: [covers Cassie's mouth with his hand] Shh! [to Maddy] Uh, just a sec! Hold on! [Maddy knocks on the door again] Yo, just a minute!
Maddy: Open the fucking door, Nate! I have to pee!
Nate: [to Cassie] Are you fucking crying?
Maddy: Can you open the door?
Nate: [tries to calm Cassie down] Shh, there's no fucking reason to cry. You haven't been caught.
Maddy: I have to pee, Nate! Open the door!
Nate: [to Cassie] Calm down and put your clothes on.
Cassie: [whispering] I can't... [sobs] She's my best friend.
Maddy: Open the door! I need to pee!
Nate: I'm just using the bathroom! Just a second! Fucking pee outside!
Maddy: ...Are you taking a shit at a party?
...
Maddy: You're so disgusting. I can smell it! I hear you taking a shit!
Nate: [to Cassie] It's okay.
Maddy: Hurry the fuck up!
Cassie: [crying] We shouldn't have done this.
Nate: I need you to focus, okay?
Maddy: What are you fucking doing?
Cassie: I'm all tangled.
Nate: Okay, okay.
Cassie: [gets herself back in a standing position] I'm so scared. I'm really scared, Nate.
[Cassie continues crying as Maddy continues banging on the door]
Nate: Hey, look at me. Look at me. I need you to trust me. I need you to trust me, okay?
Cassie: Mm-hm.
Maddy: Wipe your ass and come out! I need to pee!
Nate: [to Cassie] I need you to listen to exactly what I say.
Maddy: I'm gonna break this fucking door, Nate! Open the fucking door!
Travis: You waiting for the bathroom?
Maddy: Do I know you?
Travis: A lot of people know me.
Maddy: Do you know me?
Travis: Yeah. You're the girl I met on New Year's Eve standing in line for the bathroom.
Maddy: [softly] Oh, God.
[Nate finally opens the door and walks out of the bathroom]
Maddy: Wait, did you not wash your hands?
Nate: What the fuck are you talking about, Maddy?
Maddy: I can't believe you took a shit at a party and you didn't wash your hands.
Travis: Yo, wassup? My name's Travis. I would shake your hand, but I don't wanna get hepatitis.
Nate: [to Maddy] Yo, can we talk somewhere in private?
Maddy: No, because I have to fucking pee. Move.
[As Maddy walks into the bathroom, Cassie is revealed to be hiding in the bathtub]
Jules: How you doing?
Rue: I'm good.
Jules: When did you relapse?
Rue: Just fuckin' weed, Jules.
Jules: Like, when did you relapse?
Rue: You want me to be honest?
Jules: Yeah.
Rue: The night you left.
Rue: Jules? I'm, uh, I'm sorry about that. I didn't mean to be mean. I don't know, I'm just having a tough time, you know? I just really miss you.
Jules: I really miss you, too.
Rue: I know that I never, uh, I never really said it before, but I want to be with you.
Fezco: Hey, where'd you go? I was startin' to miss you.
Lexi: That's not true.
Fezco: Why would I lie? You're, like, the coolest person in here. Yo, I gotta cut soon, but... I just wanna tell you that... talkin' to you was one of the best parts of my whole year.
Lexi: Yeah, right.
Fezco: Why you always doin' that shit?
Lexi: What?
Fezco: I don't know, like, doubtin' yourself and shit.
Lexi: Oh, I don't know. Do I do that?
Fezco: Mmm, kinda. Yo... Can I, like, get your phone number or somethin'?
Fezco: What's up, man? You havin' a good time?
Nate: [coughs] Yeah.
Fezco: You make any New Year's resolutions?
Nate: No, you?
Fezco: A few.
Nate: [smiles] The last time we talked, didn't you say you wanted to kill me?
Fezco: Yeah, well... It's a new year, playboy.
[After raising their cups in a toast, Fez smashes a liquor bottle over Nate's head and beats him viciously to the shock of the partygoers. McKay pulls Fez away from Nate as other guests try to break up the fight.]
Virgil: Chill, chill, chill! Come on, guys, it's New Year! Come on!
[Fez walks away, leaving Lexi speechless. Rue and Jules are in shock as they watch Cassie, Maddy and McKay carry Nate out of the house.]
Rue: Damn.
Out of Touch [2.02]
Nurse: I'm sorry but 17-year-olds can't donate eggs.
Maddy: That's fucking retarded.
Cal: Cassie, I asked you a question.
Lexi: She didn’t see anything.
Cal: I’m not asking you. I’m asking her.
Cassie: I already told Mrs. Jacobs I didn’t see anything.
Cal: I know. We just don’t believe you.
Cassie: I’m telling the truth.
Cal: Look, Cassie, I’m more than happy to get the Chief of Police, Bill Greenwood, involved. Old family friend. Maybe he should have this conversation with you. With everyone, in fact. You know? Get everyone’s cell phones. Text histories. Find out what exactly happened. Should we do that instead? [beat; Cassie looks over at Lexi] Don’t look at her. Look at me.
[Cut to Cassie and Lexi in their bedroom after Cassie confesses what happened]
Lexi: Why would you say that?
Cassie: What?! What was I supposed to do?
Lexi: Not say anything.
Cassie: You heard him! He was going to call the police!
Lexi: No, he wasn’t. He was bluffing, and you fell for it ’cause you’re a fucking idiot!
Cassie: Why do you even care?!
Lexi: Because you just ruined someone’s life!
Cassie: Fezco almost killed Nate! That was his decision!
[Lexi lies in her bed in frustration]
Rue: [V.O.] Lexi had thought about that night a lot. How could Fezco be so kind to her, and so violent towards Nate? She couldn’t remember the last time someone her age asked her so many questions about herself. He actually cared about what she had to say. And then, ten minutes later… almost beat Nate Jacobs to death. And even if Nate deserved it, it was a horrible thing to do. It made her think about her entire life. How she’s always been so passive. How she never had the courage to say anything. And even the time when she did get the courage to say something...
Lexi: Rue, you really need to get help.
Rue: What, are you gonna tell my mom or something?
Lexi: Yeah, if you don’t stop.
Rue: [V.O.] ...she backed down. She hated herself for being so weak and passive and afraid. So, a couple of days after Cal came over, she decided to say something.
Rue: [V.O.] It was the first day of school after the new year. And I finally had everything I’d ever wished for. [to Jules] You know you’re like a dream?
Jules: [chuckles] I didn’t know you were such a romantic, Rue.
Rue: What can I say?
[Rue sees Elliot walking down the hallway and immediately gets tense]
Rue: [V.O.] Oh, fuck… I completely forgot he goes to our school.
Jules: I love you.
Rue: [V.O.] If this asshole says anything about doing drugs, I will literally slit his throat in the quad.
Jules: Rue?
Rue: Yeah?
Jules: I said, “I love you.”
Rue: I love you, too.
Jules: You kinda checked out for a second.
[Elliot notices Rue and makes his way towards her]
Rue: [V.O.] Please, God, do not fuck up my life.
Elliot: Yo, Rue.
Rue: Hey.
Elliot: What’s going on?
Jules: Hi.
Rue: Nothing.
Jules: I’m Jules.
Rue: Sorry, this is Jules.
Elliot: Hey, I'm Elliot. Nice to meet you.
Rue: Sorry, introductions are usually very overwhelming and… debilitating for me… at least.
Jules: ...Uh, so, how do you know Elliot?
Elliot: We met on New Year’s.
Rue: [beat; chuckles] Oh shit, yeah. That was it, New Year’s. That’s… That’s where we met. [pause] Jules is my girlfriend.
Elliot: Wow… I didn’t know you were, um…
Jules: In a relationship?
Rue: [V.O.] The other thing I wish I could mention is I sort of spent the last few days hanging out with Elliot. Which was cool ’cause he makes a ton of money selling music stems online, and we bought a bunch of drugs.
Jules: Um… it was nice to meet you, and I’ll see you later, Rue.
Elliot: Nice to meet you.
Rue: [to Jules] I love you. Bye.
[Rue just stands still in the hallway with Elliot as Jules walks off]
Rue: [V.O.] Fuck. Was it just me or was that super awkward?
Elliot: That was awkward.
Rue: [V.O.] Now, at the time, I didn’t know how much the Elliot thing upset Jules. But I never thought that Jules was like clingy or jealous, so I didn’t think it’d be a big deal.
Jules: It is a big deal.
Rue: Why?
Jules: The fact that you’re even asking me to explain it to you is kind of an even bigger deal.
Rue: Oh, I don’t understand how such a small fucking thing has become such a big fucking thing.
Jules: 'Cause it hurt my feelings.
Rue: Why?
Jules: 'Cause I can tell you have a crush on him.
Rue: I do not have a fucking crush on him.
Jules: Then why else would you forget meeting him? Like, “Oh, that’s right. New Year’s.”
Rue: Jules, it’s not like that.
Jules: “Silly me.”
Rue: It’s not like that.
Jules: Well, I hope not. That would really suck.
Rue: I’m sorry.
Jules: Um, I gotta be home in 15 minutes, or else I’m gonna get grounded for another two weeks. I’ll see ya later, Rue.
Rue: I get you in trouble?
Jules: Yeah, kinda.
Maddy: I feel like I would look so sexy pregnant.
Kat: Maddy, please do not get pregnant.
Maddy: I wouldn't wear any of those nasty maternity clothes. I would just be me, plus pregnant.
BB: Remember when I got pregnant?
Maddy: Yes, and it would be nothing like that.
BB: [to Kat] Well, speaking of baby daddies, I seen the photo that Ethan posted to you. It's cute as fuck.
Maddy: Yeah, Kat, stop flaunting your healthy, non-abusive, wonderful relationship. It's actually triggering.
Kat: Yeah, he's um, really sweet.
Rue: [V.O.] Ethan made plans with Kat to go bowling that night. Kat was depressed because she couldn’t figure out why she didn’t love Ethan. So she decided to make a list of pros and cons. But she couldn’t think of anything, which made her realize Ethan might not be the problem.
Kat: Mmm... [mimics shooting herself in the head and falls aside]
Rue: [V.O.] Kat hated herself. But the problem with hating yourself is you can’t really talk about it. Because at some point recently, the whole world joined a self-help cult and won’t shut the fuck up about it.
Influencer Amanda LaCount: [in an online tutorial video] It’s not gonna solve all your life problems, but it is gonna solve... [Kat closes laptop]
Influencer Andrea Somer: [standing in bathroom doorway] Kat. You’re one of the bravest, most beautiful human beings I have ever seen.
Kat: [with her mouth full] That’s not true.
Influencer Andrea Somer: Yes, it is. I wish I had your confidence.
Kat: But I don’t, like... feel healthy.
Influencer Andrea Somer: Yes, you are.
Kat: No, like... seriously. I’m not.
Influencer Andrea Somer: Kat, you just have to love yourself.
Kat: But that’s what I’m trying to tell you! I fucking hate myself!
Influencer Emily Roslyn Villarreal: Every day you get out of bed... it’s an act of courage.
Kat: That’s easy for you to say. You don’t have, like, fucking mental problems.
Influencer Emily Roslyn Villarreal: Yes, I do. Why do you think I look like this?
Kat: Are you kidding? I wish my mental problems made me look like you.
Influencer Emily Roslyn Villarreal: Trust me, you don’t
Kat: Trust me, I do! You’re like the most beautiful person I’ve ever fucking seen.
Influencer Emily Roslyn Villarreal: Maybe by a white, cis-male, heteronormative standard.
Kat: [lies in bed and covers face with pillow] Oh, my God! Are you fucking joking?!
Influencer Bree Kish: [rips pillow off and yells] Kat! Are you fucking serious?! That’s not you fucking talking! It’s the patriarchy!
Kat: It is me talking! You are not listening!
Influencer Bree Kish: No! Society puts things into your mind!
Kat: I don’t care about society! I feel like shit!
Influencer Eden Rose: Kat, you need to smash all beauty standards!
Kat: But I can’t even get out of bed!
Influencer Annie Hsu: You have to love yourself.
Influencer Jackie Winn: You need to find your inner fuckin’ warrior!
Influencer Chloe Bunce: Become a bad bitch!
Influencer Amanda LaCount: Just like you did last year!
Kat: But that wasn’t even real.
Influencer Jewell Farshad: It looked real.
Kat: That was the point!
Influencer Emily Roslyn Villarreal: I found it inspiring.
Kat: [gets up out of bed] Shut the fuck up!
Influencer Group: [chanting, repeatedly swarming and following Kat] Love yourself!
Kat: [goes into the bathroom, shouts with influencers following her, shouting and pointing] Leave me alone! Get the fuck out!
[Kat glances at phone and sees a text message from Ethan:"Be there in 20 mins".[She looks up and notices that all influencers disappeared]Kat: Fuck.
Rue: [V.O.] It's one thing to dislike your parents. It's not like you have a choice. But if you dislike your kid, well, that's sort of your fault.
Rue: And like with Jules, right? Like, when I first met her, I was just immediately in love.
Elliot: In love?
Rue: Yeah. When you say it out loud, it kind of sounds small.
Elliot: What's a bigger feeling than love?
Rue: Loss.
Elliot: You think?
Rue: Yeah, I think so. Yeah. I don't know, maybe that's what it was, right? Like, as soon as I saw her, I was just immediately afraid to lose her.
Ruminations: Big and Little Bullys [2.03] [Lexi notices Cassie doing her makeup in their bathroom in the middle of the night]
Lexi: Why are you awake at 4 a.m?
Cassie: Why are you awake at 4 a.m?
Rue: [V.O.] Cassie decided to wake up at 4 a.m. that morning to get ready for school. She needed to clear her head. And for those three hours she spent getting ready… she only thought about one thing. There was also something refreshing about the amount of time she was putting into herself. She loved the ritual, the attention to detail... the anxiety and excitement she felt in her stomach. And even if Nate pretended not to notice her. It was her way of telling him that she was his.
Elliot: True or dare?
Jules: Dare.
Elliot: Yo, Jules. I dare you to take a piss in the middle of the street.
Jules: Alright. [gets out vehicle] Sure, yes! [Elliot chuckles] Gender-fuck me, please!
Elliot: Wow!
Rue: Jules!
Elliot: Wow!
Jules: Okay, all right!
Rue: Oh, shit!
Elliot: Ohh.[Jules starts pissing]Rue: Oh. Okay, Jules. [Elliot chuckles]Elliot: [laughs when a vehicle is oncoming] Hey! Car! [motorist honks]Jules: Oh... my God. [turns to face Elliot's vehicle]Elliot: [repeatedly] No...!
Rue: [repeatedly] Not on the car...!
Ethan: [walks up to jock and two friends] Hey, look, I, uh, I noticed the way that you’ve been lookin’ at me you know, past couple days, and I... I wanted you to know, I too, I’m into scat play, and if you wanted to, like, poop on each other–
Jock: What the fuck?![The jocks shout and chase Ethan]Ethan: Oh shit, oh shit, oh!
Elliot: Oh, my God.
Jock: I’ll fuckin’ kill you, goddammit!
Rue: If I were a genius, I’d figure out a way to do drugs for free. What if I am a genius? I’m a fuckin’ genius, Fez....Fezco: Is that so?
Rue: It is fuckin’ so because I came up with an amazing fuckin’ plan.
Fezco: And what would that be, Rue?
Rue: All right, so [clears throat] ...all you would have to do is front me, like, $5,000 worth of drugs, okay? And–
Fezco: Hell the fuck no.
Rue: Okay, well, before you say no, you kind of have to let me finish, right?
Fezco: Hell the fuck no.
Rue: Okay, why do you keep saying that?
Fezco: I did not like the way that the plan started.
Rue: Okay, well, you have to let me finish the fucking plan.
Fezco: No.
Rue: Yes. You–
Fezco: Hell the fuck no, Rue.
Rue: Fuck it. I give up. Whatever. I’ll just take my fuckin’ business elsewhere. It’s your fuckin’ loss, man.
Fezco: Hell the fuck no.
Elliot: [loitering in hallway with Rue] That’s a good-ass plan.
Rue: Thank you. Fuckin’ Fez didn’t even wanna hear it.
Elliot: Why not?
Rue: Ego shit, man. [to Lexi in hallway putting up flyers over the official "Oklahoma" play production calling for auditions of her original play also entitled Oklahoma] Yo, Lex, what're you doin'?
Lexi: Oh, just putting up fliers for this play I'm doing.
Rue: What play? [V.O.] The only thing is... Lexi hadn't told anyone about the play... including Cassie.
Lexi: I'd actually love for you to read it. [aloud] Yeah, for sure. Just, uh, send it to me. [enters washroom]Cassie: [enters washroom] Hey, Rue-Rue.
Rue: Hi, Cass. Wait, are you in the play?
Cassie: What play?
Rue: Lexi's play.
Cassie: What do you mean, Lexi's play?
Rue: Uh, the play that Lexi wrote.
Lexi: "Oklahoma".
Cassie: What?
Rue: The play's called "Oklahoma"?
Lexi: No, the drama club's doing "Oklahoma."
Cassie: Oh my god. Do I look like I'm in "Oklahoma"?
Rue: Why would your play be set in Oklahoma?
Cassie: [facing Rue with Lexi making a slash throat (meaning; stop talking) gesture behind her] You thought I was auditioning for "Oklahoma"?
Rue: I haven't read it, so...
Cassie: [Lexi frantically makes waving gestures (meaning; PLEASE stop talking) behind her] Are you making fun of me, or did you actually think I was auditioning for "Oklahoma"?
Maddy: [walks up with Kat] Why the fuck would you audition for "Oklahoma"?
Cassie: I'm not!
Maddy: Then why the fuck do you look like you're auditioning for "Oklahoma"?
Cassie: Do I?
Kat: Yes.
Cassie: Has everyone read "Oklahoma" but me?
Kat: "Oklahoma"'s not like a play you read.
Cassie: Rue, are you on drugs?
Rue: Yes.
Kat: You relapsed?
Cassie: Wait, what?!
Rue: Oh, I've just... nah, I've just been smokin' a little bit of weed.
Kat: Wait, I don't understand. If you're not auditioning for "Oklahoma," then why do you look like that?
Cassie: Like what?!
Maddy: Like a country music star.
Cassie: In a good way or a bad way?
Maddy: Bitch, you better be joking. Are you okay, Cass?
Cassie: No! Yes, fuck it! I am in love with Nate Jacobs and he is in love with me! And don't you fucking give me that look, Maddy, because I didn't fuck your boyfriend! You two were broken up for three weeks and three days before we even had sеx, so I didn't betray you! Plus, you guys are terrible for each other and you know I'm right and you guys can all judge me [turns head over left shoulder to Rue then back at Maddy and Kat] if you want, but I do not care! I have never, ever been happier!
Rue: [V.O.] But she didn't say that. In fact, it was much weirder. She just stared straight ahead like she's doing now and didn't say a word.
Maddy: I think being single's really stressing you out.
Cassie: No, I don't think so.
Maddy: I hate it.
Cassie: Really?
Maddy: Yeah. I think Nate really fuckеd me up. [Theo gasps] I said, "Messed me up."
Theo: No, you didn't.
Cassie: What do you mean?
Maddy: I keep trying to figure out if I feel worse now than I did when I was with Nate.
Cassie: I mean, you were really unhappy.
Maddy: Like, I remember how the good parts felt. But when it was bad, was it really that bad? Or am I just telling myself that because I'm lonely and bored?
Cassie: [shakes her head] No, you... you deserve someone who's passionate and loving. Who yearns for you, and–and can't wait to see you, who... who you're not gonna fight with, and just who's gonna love you. Like... really, truly love you.
Maddy: Yeah... I don't know. [to Theo] Do me a favor... when you get older, don't be an asshоlе to girls you like, okay?
Cal: I know you and your drug addict friend. That girl... who tried to extort my son.
Fezco: What?
Cal: Because of what I did to her friend.
Fezco: The fuck are you talkin' about, man?
Cal: You know, the blonde.
Fezco: Who? Jule?
Cal: [sighs] Look, man. I didn't know she was 17.
Fezco: ...You tellin' me you had sex with Jule?
Faye: Who's Jule?
Fezco: What the fuck, man?
Faye: Do I know Jule?
Fezco: The fuck are we even talkin' about right now, bro?
Faye: Jule... Jule, Jule.
Cal: I just want the disc.
Fezco: What disc?!
Cal: Of Jule and I.
Fezco: Yo, you recorded that shit?!
Cal: I didn't know.
Fezco: You didn't know that you were recording?
Cal: I fucked up.
Fezco: Obviously, man! Yo, who the fuck even told you I gave a shit about this anyway?
Cal: My son.
Fezco: Your son? The one that's in love with Jule?
Faye: Aw, that's cute.
Fezco: That's not cute, man. What the fuck?
Cal: What?
Fezco: What kinda weird-ass father-son shit is goin' on around here, bro?
Cal: ...I'm extremely confused.
Fezco: You're confused? I'm fuckin' confused, bro!
Faye: Me, too.
Rue: Now as a beloved character that a lot of people are rooting for, I feel a certain responsibility to make good decisions... [side-eye into camera] but I relapsed. In all fairness, I did say in the beginning I had no intentions of staying clean. But I get it. Our country's dark. And fucked up. And people... just want to find hope.
Ethan: Somewhere.
Rue: Anywhere. And if not in reality, then in television. Unfortunately, I'm not it. [takes a sip of cough medicine directly from bottle]Ali: So, Rue, the $64,000 question is… What’s in the suitcase?
Rue: School books.
Ali: Ah, is that why you’re in that getup? You became an honors student?
Rue: I’m not in the mood for a lecture.
Ali: Lecture? I like to think we have conversations.
Rue: Yeah, I’m sure you do.
Ali: Okay, what? Did a hornet crawl up your ass or something? What’s wrong with you?
Rue: Look, I’m–Man, I’m not trying to hear a fucking lecture about how my life would be better if I stopped doing drugs, or believed in God or Allah or whatever the fuck.
Ali: Okay, well, you’re the one lookin’ like a Jehovah’s Witness. I just don’t think that there’s Bibles in that suitcase.
Rue: Shut the fuck up, man.
Ali: Wait, wait, wait. Excuse me? "Shut the fuck up?" Don’t play that shit with me. I've always accepted you for who you are: The good, the bad, and the ugly. Don't tell me to shut the fuck up. I'm not some parent you can just treat like shit.
Rue: Yeah, well, good thing nobody's really looking to you to be a fucking parent.
Ali: Yo! Excuse me? [uncomfortable pause] Excuse me?! [scoffs] When I sit across from you and tell you something about my life, you don't get to use that shit against me. You cross that line again, we're done. You talk back right now, we're done. One more fuckin' disrespectful word outta your mouth and we're done, you hear me? HEY! YOU HEAR ME?!
Rue: Or what, Ali? You gonna hit me?
You Who Cannot See, Think of Those Who Can [2.04]
Jules: Does that feel okay?
Rue: Yeah, it feels amazing. [V.O.] I don't think you understand how much I love Jules. The only problem is, I took so many narcos, I literally can't feel a fucking thing.
Jules: Is there anything you want me to, like... do differently?
Rue: Nah, nah. It's amazing.
Jules: Rue, you keep saying that.
Rue: I know, 'cause this is amazing.
Maddy: I feel like you ruined me forever.
Nate: Why does it sound romantic when you say it like that?
Maddy: I love you.
Nate: I love you, too.
Maddy: Why did you love me?
Nate: I still love you.
Maddy: But why?
Nate: 'Cause you're smart and cruel... but not really.
Maddy: Not really smart?
Nate: Not really cruel.
Maddy: ...It's funny you say that because it's something that I didn't really realize until after we broke up. [pause] Did you know that I loved you? I'm not talking about obsession or fighting or fucking. I'm talking about love. Did you feel loved by me?
Nate: I don't know.[Cassie sitting on Nate's bed while Nate is in the bathroom]Nate: But you knew I had feelings for Maddy.
Cassie: But I didn't know you were gonna get back together with her.
Nate: How many times do I have to tell you that we're not back together?
Cassie: Right, you just hung out and talked about love.
Nate: Oh, Jesus fucking Christ.
Cassie: If I would've known you were gonna get back together, I wouldn't have done this.
Nate: That's a lie!
Cassie: It's not a lie!
Nate: You have this image of yourself as so fucking sweet and innocent... but it's bullshit. If you were a fucking sweet person, you wouldn't have fuckеd your best friend's boyfriend.
Cassie: [shakes her head] You two were broken up.
Nate: That is a comfort to nobody but you.
Cassie: I can't do this.
Nate: What, you wanna go tell Maddy?
Cassie: Maybe I will.
Nate: You're afraid that I'm still in love with Maddy, so you're gonna do whatever the fuck it takes to destroy that. This isn't about being a fucking good person, Cassie, or being a fucking good friend. This is about you getting what you want. [pause] You can fucking leave, or you can get into bed. It's up to you.
Cassie: You know what you don't realize, Nate? Is I don't care what happens to me. I don't care how angry Maddy gets. You two shouldn't be together. You're toxic.
Nate: How would you know?
Cassie: Because she's my best friend, and I'm in a relationship with you. She's not good for you, you're not good for her, and I will do everything I can to prevent it.
Nate: Maddy, that's literally fucking insane! [Cassie gasps] Madd... Cassie, I s–
Cassie: See?! This is what I'm talking about!
Nate: I–I said Maddy because we're talking about how fucking crazy Maddy is, which you can't seem to fucking comprehend!
Cassie: No! What you don't understand, Nate, is I AM CRAZIER!
Nate: That's not something to be fucking proud of, Cassie!
Cassie: No... but it is something you should be scared of.
Nate: [quietly] What the fuck? What the fuck!? You can't fucking blackmail me into a relationship with you!
Cassie: Blackmail means you don't have choices. But in reality, you do have choices. You just have to own up to the consequences of them!
Nate: That is the LITERAL FUCKING DEFINITION OF BLACKMAIL! If you don't do this, I'm gonna do that! That is blackmail!
Cassie: FINE, IT'S BLACKMAIL! I don't care! It doesn't change anything!
Nate: It's fuckеd up!
Cassie: You know what's fuckеd up, Nate?! You telling me that you love me, and then going and being in a relationship with my best friend!
Nate: ...OH, WHAT THE FUCK?! WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?! WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?!
Cassie: [calmly] Okay. Bye.
Nate: [sighs when Cassie leaves the bedroom] For fucking...[Cassie walks down the stairs as Nate tries to stop her from leaving]
Nate: Cassie, stop. I love you.[Cassie stops for a moment, then continues walking downstairs. Nate punches the wall in anger.][Cal returns home extremely drunk and starts urinating on the floor. His wife, Marsha, comes out of their upstairs bedroom and sees him.]Marsha: Are you–Are you peeing? Okay, Cal, wh–what is wrong with you?
Cal: I think I’m lonely.
Marsha: What?
Cal: I think I’m lonely.
Marsha: Okay, look, could you please put your penis away?
Cal: No.
Marsha: Cal, I’m not gonna ask you again. Put your penis away.
Cal: I am who I am.[Nates's brother, Aaron, is awakened by the sounds of Cal and Marsha's argument and comes out of his own bedroom]
Aaron: Oh, fuck. Mom, what’s going on?
Marsha: Okay. Cal, put your dick away.
Aaron: Yo, Dad, what the fuck are you doing?
Cal: I’m sorry. [laughing] I was just–I was just telling your mother that I think I’m very lonely.
Aaron: Okay, but like, can you put your fucking dick away?
Marsha: [pause; Cal laughs again] Okay, Cal. Cal, this is not funny.[Nate comes out with the rest of his family]
Nate: What’s going on?
Aaron: Dad’s standing in the foyer with his dick out.
Nate: [shields his eyes; to Cal] What the fuck are you doing?
Marsha: I don’t know.
Cal: You know what you three assholes are looking at? The man with no name.
Aaron: What? What the fuck are you even saying? Yo, what the fuck is going on, guys?
Cal: I’m a rogue. I march to the beat of my own drum. You guys should’ve seen me tonight. I don’t know if you would’ve been proud, but… ya might’ve been impressed.
Marsha: Cal, listen to me. I think you need to see a doctor. Alright? You’re not–You’re not you.
Cal: No, Marsha. That’s where you’re wrong. I am 100% me.
Marsha: Okay, you’re scaring me now.
Cal: You know why? ‘Cause I’m a man. I’m an animal. I’m a motherfucking Rottweiler. [sighs] You know how many men I’ve fucked?
Aaron: What?!
Marsha: Cal, stop it.
Cal: Aaron–
Marsha: Cal, please. Please stop.
Cal: Do you know how many men I’ve fucked?
Aaron: Dad, why are you saying this?
Cal: Guess.
Aaron: I–I don’t understand. Like, what the fuck is going on?
Cal: I had sex with a man for the first time… when you… were in your mama’s belly.
Aaron: Dad, why the fuck are you saying these things? Like, have you lost your fucking mind? You’re talking about fucking men in front of Mom when I was... What? Like, what the fuck is wrong with you? Who the fuck are you?
Cal: Here’s the funny thing… [pause; zips his pants up] If I said tonight that… I went to the strip club, and I… [slaps Marsha's ass; chuckles heartily] picked up a real grade-A piece of ass–huge tits, shaved pussy–and I fucked the shit out of her in my truck… you wouldn’t be one-tenth as appalled as you are right now. You wouldn’t be standing here saying, “Dad, what are you talkin’ about?” You’d be like, “Dad, don’t say that in front of Mom.” [points at Aaron and Nate] Fuck you… Fuck you. You’re a bunch of fucking hypocrites. I’m a man. I’ll fuck whoever I want, whenever I want. I’ll fuck men, I’ll fuck women, I’ll fuck transsexuals, and I’ll have a mighty fine time doing it. I eat what I kill.
Marsha: I’m going to bed.[Cal follows Marsha upstairs]Cal: I’m a faggot… sexist, chaser, pig fucking creep, and I love it. Living a double life? Not my biggest regret. [beat; points at Nate] You are. But let’s be honest, we all live double lives. Don’t give me that look, Marsha. You got that shoebox full of love letters that camp counselor used to write you. You saved them. Flirting on Facebook… [stutters] I–I get it. It feels good to know that you were loved by somebody other than just me. I’m not standing here looking at you like, “How could you?”[Marsha says nothing to Cal, walks back to her bedroom and closes the door]Cal: I mean, we all have secrets. [looks at a framed picture of his family and takes it off the wall] Aaron? The porn on your fucking computer made my jaw drop. Marsha, come back. You saw it. Your mother’s the one who showed me. Don’t talk to me about secrets. Watching eight people cum on one person’s face, gang-bangs, fucking cum-funnels, fucking pissing in people’s asses. Jesus fucking Christ, man. I got problems, you got problems. You know, I was kind of uptight when I met your mother. She was a freak… and a fucking fox. Marsha… you were a fucking fox! [pause] Nathaniel… Your whole fucking life’s a secret. A mystery. [walks downstairs to the foyer] Who knows about you? I have lived with you. I have raised you. I am your father. I know nothing about you. [brief pause] That’s not true. I know that you’re angry. I’m so sorry I fucked you up with my double life. [laughs] Okay, maybe I took mine to the extreme. I’ll admit that, but… I have a problem. But the reason I have a problem is this family. That’s why. I’m not allowed to form an emotional connection... and I’m an emotional guy. You fuckers backed me into a corner. But you know what? I think you’ve set me free. So… this is farewell. I left you with a little… [points at puddle of urine with his foot] memory of me here on the floor of the foyer. [to Aaron and Nate] You… two dickwads can draw straws to see who cleans it up. I’ll see you assholes later.[Cal leaves the house, taking the picture frame with him] Stand Still Like the Hummingbird [2.05]
Leslie: [frustrated] I RAISED YOU! I DID! OKAY?! AND YOU DON'T EVER FUCKING SCARE ME LIKE THAT! [calms down] You're not a good person, Rue. [Rue grins and chuckles] You smiling? Really? You're proud of that?
Rue: You know what’s a shame, Mom? My dad’s dead. Kinda keeps you from admitting what a shit fuckin’ mother you are. [scoffs] “Oh, poor Leslie. Her daughter’s an addict, but, you know, her dad did die.”[Rue walks into Gia's bedroom]Rue: You hear that, Gia?! You hear that?! I don’t wanna put too much pressure on you, but you’re probably gonna have to be a fucking neurosurgeon, or maybe an astronaut because if not, then Mom is zero for fucking two. And that means that it might actually just be her fucking fault.
Gia: Rue, stop!
Rue: Yeah, that means, maybe, she actually fucked up![Rue continues searching for the suitcase with the pills]Rue: You don’t fucking recognize me?! Well, neither do fucking I! I DON'T FUCKING RECOGNIZE ME EITHER! Where did you put it?! [groans] You wish I was different?! So do I! You fucking hate me?! SO DO I!...Rue: Tell me where they are, Mom! Fuck! [screams] Where did you fucking put them?! I know they’re fucking in here, Mom! I know they’re in here! What did you do with them?! What did you do?! Where the fuck are they? What did you do with them?
Jules: We flushed them down the toilet.[Rue stops in her tracks and hurries into the dining room, where Jules and Elliot are seated]Leslie: You look embarrassed, Rue. You embarrassed ’cause Jules just heard everything you said? Don’t cry. Own that shit. Own what you just said.
Rue: [whispers] Fuck you. [chuckles] Oh, okay. I see what the fuck is going on here. Well, first thing’s first, Elliot here is a fucking addict... so if he tells you anything fucking different, he’s a liar and a fucking snake. Fuck you!
Jules: He cares about you–
Rue: This doesn’t fucking concern you, Jules.
Jules: Yes, it does–
Rue: No the fuck it doesn’t!
Jules: Yes, it does.
Rue: How?!
Jules: ‘Cause I don’t want you to kill yourself.
Rue: You’re a fucking rat!
Jules: You were lying to me.
Rue: Yeah, so you go tell my fuckin’ mom?!
Jules: I didn’t know what else to do.
Rue: And why the fuck would you say anything? [scoffs] You are fucking dead to me.
Jules: You don't mean that.
Rue: I fucking mean every fucking word. You're dead to me, Jules.
Jules: I don't believe you.
Rue: You and me? We're fucking done. There is nothing fucking there any more. Nothing... fucking... there. You know, I got a lot of regrets in my life. But gotta tell you, Jules. Meeting you... has gotta be at the top of my fucking list. [pause; Jules tears up] Oh, now you wanna fucking cry? Now you wanna fucking cry? Yeah, you’re a fucking vampire. You just go around fucking sucking the fucking spirit out of everyone! You like that shit... makes you feel good.
Jules: You know that’s not true.
Rue: It is fucking true. It’s all about fucking Jules, right? And you don’t know what the fuck you’re doing. You just act all fucking innocent, like you’re this fucking sweet little angel. This innocent, sweet, little fucking angel who doesn’t know what the fuck they’re doing. You know what the fuck you’re doing!
Jules: I love you.
Rue: No the fuck you don’t. You love being loved! You’re a fucking greedy whore who just likes sucking the life out of people. And it fucking hurts, Jules!
Jules: I love you.
Rue: No, you don’t. Stop saying that! You don’t love me! You fucking left me… when I fucking needed you. You fucking left me... when I was at my fucking lo... [breathes heavily] You fucking left me at my fucking lowest! And a real fucking friend, someone who fucking loves you, wouldn’t do some shit like that, Jules!
Jules: I love you and I wanna help you.
Rue: If you wanna help me, uh, you can honestly–You can just stay out of my fucking life. Forever. [chuckles] That would be great because, honestly, looking at you makes me physically fucking ill![After Rue finishes cleaning herself up in the Howards' bathroom, she sees everyone, including her mother, downstairs staring at her]Rue: Oh, fuck. It'll never fuckin' end.
Leslie: This can’t make you feel good, Rue. Living like this. Lying to the people you love, being mean to the people you love. This can’t make you feel good about yourself.
Rue: I don’t care. Just fuckin' leave me alone, please.
Leslie: I know you’re in pain.
Rue: You have no fucking idea, Mom.
Leslie: Let’s get back into the car, and let me take you to the hospital.
Rue: I can't get clean, I can't do that shit forever.
Cassie: You don't have to. Just take it one day at a time.[Cassie looks around the room for approval and is mostly met with awkward nods]Suze: [whispers] Yeah.
Rue: Hey, Cass?
Cassie: Yeah?
Rue: I have a quick question for you.
Cassie: What?
Rue: How long have you been fucking Nate Jacobs?
Cassie: [sheepishly laughs] Wh–What? What–What are you talking about?!
Rue: How long have you been fucking Nate?
Cassie: I'm not. [laughs nervously] What? I'm not.
Maddy: [looks at Kat in confusion; to Rue] What are you talking about?
Rue: Oh, I just... I–I saw her get in his truck, and then, kiss him and drive off. That was, like–What, like, uh... Uh, like a month ago?
Cassie: Uh...
Maddy: [to Cassie] Are you kidding me?
Cassie: Uh...
Kat: Cass, that's, like... really bad.
Maddy: You're fucking Nate? Are you kidding me?
Cassie: No, I... I don't even know why she would say that!
Maddy: You're lying!
Suze: Yeah, can we just table this conversation?
Kat: [to Maddy] Okay, let's go–
Maddy: No, no. You expect me to stand here next to my best friend who's been lying to me about fucking my ex-boyfriend?! I'm literally gonna get violent!
Kat: Okay, no. Let's just–
Suze: No, there is no need to get violent, okay?! Because we are having an intervention! Stop it!
Leslie: [to Rue] I'm begging you. Let's just get into the car.
Rue: Mom... I can't.
Kat: Let's just talk–
Maddy: [sees Cassie tearing up] Oh, you're crying?!
Kat: No... Maddy!
Maddy: You're fucking crying, you FUCKING BITCH?!
Kat: Maddy, come on!
Maddy: [gets in Cassie's face] You're the one who's hurt?! You're the most self-centered, idiotic person I have ever fucking met! You fuck my ex, and you're fucking crying?! Are you fucking kidding me?!
Kat: Let's just do this later.
Leslie: Look, I'm sorry. I'm sorry, but I don't give a shit who's fucking who, okay? If you're gonna keep talking about it, get out of the room!
Suze: Yeah, absolutely. You're being an animal...
Lexi: [to Cassie] Do you wanna go on a walk?!
Suze: ...right now to my girl.
Cassie: I don't even know why you're believing her! She's a drug addict!
Maddy: How long have you been fucking him? Be honest.
Kat: Maddy, let's just do it later.
Maddy: Kat, shut the fuck up! [to Cassie] How long have you been fucking him?! [pause; turns to Rue] Rue!
Leslie: [to Rue] Listen, let's just get into the car, okay?
Maddy: When was this?!
Rue: Right after New Year's.
Maddy: [turns back to Cassie] Oh... You dumb FUCKING BITCH. I'm gonna FUCK YOU THE FUCK UP![Cassie starts running up stairs with Maddy, Kat, Lexi and Suze in pursuit. During the commotion, Rue sneaks out of the Howards' house.]Maddy: Don't fucking run away from me, you stupid bitch!
Suze: Why are you guys... Come on!
Leslie: [notices Rue has left] Rue?
Laurie: You want to know a funny thing about me? I don't think I've ever gotten angry in my entire life.
Rue: Really?
Laurie: Well, I don't know if that's true. Is that true? [ponders for a second] Yeah, no. That's true. I've never gotten angry.
Laurie: You know, a doctor once told me they did brain studies on people who've done a lot of opiates, and that over time all the chemicals in your brain that make you happy and feel good start to decrease because your body's getting it artificially. But the longer you use, it just starts to weaken and wither, kinda like a limb that's not getting blood to it anymore. And then it just sort of falls off, and you get something called cell death where you just have these big dead spots in the parts of your brain that used to make you happy. No matter what you do, you can never get it back. He said it's basically the same brain as people who've had major strokes. But the silver lining is that the things that don't feel good don't feel as bad anymore. You know, if I was going through withdrawal, I would do anything. It's one of the good parts of being a woman: Even if you don't have money, you've still got something people want.
Rue: I think I'm gonna be sick.
A Thousand Little Trees of Blood [2.06]
Rue: [V.O.] My mom is one of those rare people, but maybe that’s ’cause she’s my mom. She also grew up in the church. And say what you want about Christians, at least they believe in forgiveness. I don’t remember everything I said to my mom.[Rue panics as she gets into a cold bath prepared by Leslie]Leslie: It's okay, Rue. It's okay.
Rue: [V.O.] I wish I could say I didn’t mean any of it. Is that actually true? I mean, I thought it. I felt it… I said it. I’m sure most people would say the world would be a better place without me. I don’t disagree. In fact, I’ve been trying to leave it for as long as I can remember. Ali is also one of those rare people. The strange thing is, I bet most people would say the same thing about him. “He’s just a fucking crackhead wife-beater.” I bet his daughter said that. Even I kinda said that. That I regret. Really fucking regret. But if I'm being honest about who I am… I’m a liar, a thief. I’m violent, abusive, manipulative...[Rue continues breathing deeply in the bathtub]Rue: It’s cold. It’s cold, Mom. Mom, it’s cold.
Leslie: Rue, you have to break your fever, baby, okay? Okay? Come on.
Rue: [V.O.] ...and even if I got clean today, no one would forget the trauma of me not being clean. But I really regret what I said to Ali. Reducing someone’s life to a moment–an ugly moment–and punishing them for it... That’s what cops do. It’s actually what everyone does. It’s what you would do to me if you didn’t know me. [pause] Anyway, I should call Ali and apologize.[Rue calls Ali to apologize to him]Ali: Hello.
Rue: Ali? It’s, um... It’s Rue.
Ali: What do you want, Rue?
Rue: Um... I just wanted to, uh, call you and tell you that, um... I just wanted to call you and tell you that I’m sorry for what I said. Um... and I really regret it. Uh... I just-I never should’ve said that.
Ali: Rue–
Rue: And I’m sorry. I’m sorry.
Ali: Rue! Listen to me. I forgive you.
Rue: You do?
Ali: I do.
Rue: [sniffling] How do you know that I mean it?
Ali: Because the hour is certain to come. So we must forgive graciously.
Rue: [crying] Thank you. [shudders] Thank you.
Rue: [V.O.] Now, Nate didn’t know what happened with Cassie and Maddy because when he exercises, he puts his phone on silent. The irony was Nate woke up that morning feeling fantastic. Because after an 18-year dick-swinging contest with his dad… Nate had finally won.[Cut to Nate and Aaron eating breakfast in their kitchen while their mother, Marsha, dances around]Rue: [V.O.] His mom seemed to be handling it well. His brother on the other hand…
Aaron: The fuck is she so happy about?
Rue: [V.O.] Not so well.[Nate returns to his bedroom and checks his phone]Rue: [V.O.] It wasn’t the 38 missed calls from Cassie that concerned him. It was the fact that there were zero calls from Maddy. Part of the reason Nate loved Maddy as much as he did is because she was loyal. But it’s also what scared the living shit out of him. If anyone crossed her, she’d bury them... and he had now really fucking crossed her. And there was no doubt in Nate’s mind what Maddy was about to do.
Maddy: [to Kat on the phone] You know when a kid shoots up a school and they go to interview the parents, and the parents are like, "We had no idea. He seemed, like, totally normal." And everyone watching is like, "You’re a fucking idiot." That’s how I feel, but with Cassie.
Kat: Look, I never trusted her.
Maddy: What? Why?
Kat: Because she seems like the kind of person who would fuck your boyfriend.
Maddy: [sighs] I think I actually wanna murder her.
Kat: I get it.
Maddy: No, like, actually plan a murder and carry it out.
Kat: I get it.
Maddy: Like a grisly murder. One that shocks the nation.
Kat: [casually] I think that's more than understandable.[Suze hands Lexi a knife block out of concern for Cassie's well-being]Suze: Lex… Hon, take these in the back and hide them in the bushes.
Lexi: You really think she’s gonna stab herself?
Suze: Your sister’s very emotional. Yes.
Lexi: Really?
Suze: In the bushes, now! Go! Hurry![Lexi walks outside to their backyard and grabs some branches to hide the knives]Rue: [V.O.] It was at some point while breaking branches off a tree in order to camouflage a bucket of kitchen knives in a bush… that Lexi started to have second thoughts about putting on her play.
Fezco: Well, you know what… what you should put in the play? That time I beat Nate’s ass at that party.
Lexi: [laughing] No! Oh, God! [Fez chuckles] I don’t know. Cassie isn’t doing too well. I’m worried that… she’s gonna see the play, and then, she’s gonna… freak out.
Fezco: Yeah, I mean… Everybody gets their feelings hurt, you know?
Lexi: Yeah.
Fezco: Some people… Some people need to get their feelings hurt sometimes.
Lexi: Yeah… It’s, like, the first time in my life I’m doing something for myself.
Fezco: Shit. What exactly is… the idea behind the play?
Lexi: I don’t know, it’s… it’s, like, about a group of girlfriends who sort of… grow up and grow apart.
Fezco: Damn, so it’s kinda like, Stand By Me vibes.
Lexi: Yes, exactly! I love that movie. That’s… exactly it.
Fezco: Hell yeah. Come on now. I’ve watched that film, like, 50 times.
Lexi: Have you really?!
Fezco: That’s my shit, come on. In fact, my grandma has it on DVD, you know?
Lexi: Should we watch it?
Rue: [V.O.] The truth was, Nate didn’t give a shit about what would happen to his dad. He did, however, care about what happened to his dad’s business because, eventually, that would become Nate’s business. And while he didn’t know much about real estate… he did know there wasn’t much of a market for homes built by a pedophile… or the son of a pedophile. Even though, technically, he wasn’t a pedophile, but it’s not like you could argue that out loud. Meanwhile, Jules was at home, and she hadn’t talked to Elliot since… You know what? Actually, I don’t wanna talk about Jules and Elliot. Fuck them. Let’s go back to Maddy.[Jules gets call from an unknown number]Jules: Hello?
Nate: Look, I know you probably don’t wanna talk to me, but I'm about to be outside your house and I really need to speak to you.
Jules: I don’t care.[She hangs up the phone and immediately gets a series of text message from Nate]"it's about my dad.and you.i just want you to be able to protect yourself.im out front."[Jules thinks for a moment, then grabs a box cutter from her room before she meets Nate in his truck. Nate offers her a bottle of beer.]Jules: No, thank you.
Nate: It’s good to see you. I know you hate me. I’ve done a lot of shitty things, but um… No, this isn’t one of ’em.
Jules: What do you want?
Nate: First… to apologize.
Jules: I’m not interested.
Nate: I know, but you are gonna be interested in the second thing. Unfortunately for you, you’re gonna have to hear my apology first. Uh… I’m sorry. For everything that I’ve done to you. [pause] You didn't deserve it. I was, uh… I was trying to protect somebody that didn’t deserve to be protected. [beat] If I could take it all back, I would, but… I did what I did. I found out about you and my dad from… from this disc. [holds up a CD case and gives it to Jules] Yeah, he, uh–He secretly records every encounter he has, and he’s been doing it, well… Well, honestly, as long as I can remember. I stole it from him, and he had a–He had a mental breakdown, and he moved out of the house, so I thought that I would, uh… I thought I’d give it to you, and, you know, you can do with it as you please.
Jules: So, there was a camera?
Nate: Yes.
Jules: And you’ve seen it?
Nate: [nods] Yeah.
Jules: Have a lot of people seen it?
Nate: No, no.
Jules: Does he know you’re giving this to me?
Nate: No. No, he would fucking kill me.
Jules: Is this, like, the only copy, or… is it other places?
Nate: I mean, it’s the only one that I know of, yeah.
Jules: …Why are you giving this to me?
Nate: Honestly, the answer is too stupid and simple. I think it’s better if we just keep it a mystery.
Jules: What, did you become, like, a good person?
Nate: [shakes his head] Absolutely not, no. I mean, you should’ve seen what I had to do to get it.
Jules: [pause] I came out here with a box cutter in my sleeve. You know, in case there was a chance I might have to slit your throat. [Nate just grins] That’s how little I trust you. Well… thank you.
Nate: You’re welcome.
Jules: ...Um, I’m gonna go.
Nate: Okay. [grabs Jules' hand] Hey, um… For what it’s worth… everything I ever said was true.
Jules: [beat; shrugs] Same here.
The Theater and Its Double [2.07]
Maddy: Wait, is this fucking play about us?
Rue: [V.O.] For the last few months, Lexi had been talking to Fezco every day.
Fezco: I still don't understand what the play is actually about though.
Lexi: It's about friendship.
Fezco: Well, that's nice. Everybody's gonna love that.
Lexi: Yeah, I–I mean, I hope so. I just... I keep second-guessing myself and getting anxious. Like, if people are gonna think that it's good or bad, or if it's gonna upset people or not.
Fezco: But why would anyone be upset by it?
Lexi: Oh, you know, it's–it's based on real people.
Fezco: Yeah, you really strokin' the bee's nest with that one.
Lexi: Am I?
Fezco: I mean... if someone invited me to a play, and... they didn't even tell me I was a character in it? I'd definitely have some questions.
Lexi: Like, bad questions?
Fezco: Depends on the play.
Lexi: Well, would you be upset by it?
Fezco: It depends on the play.
Lexi: Right.
Fezci: And the intentions of the person who made the play.
Lexi: My intentions are good.
Fezco: Then you ain't got nothin' to worry about.
Lexi: But... what if they think my intentions aren't good when in reality they are good?
Fezco: Well, that's what I call a quandary.
Lexi: What’s the answer?
Fezco: Uh... Wait, what was the question again?
Lexi: Like, what happens if Cassie sees the play and thinks I’m being cruel, even though I’m not?
Fezco: Well, how about you just don’t invite her then?
Lexi: No, she’d get so mad.
Fezco: Even more mad than if she actually saw the play?
Lexi: That’s... I don’t know.
Lexi: Eww, God. What the... ? Did someone die in this dress? Smells like shit. [gags, then smiles] I love theater.
Leslie: You broke me. Completely broke me. I give up. Hey... you wanna kill yourself doing drugs? Go ahead. I'm not gonna stand in your way.
Rue: So I can do drugs?
Leslie: Yeah.
Rue: Anything I want?
Leslie: The world's your oyster.
Rue: Mom, are you fucking with me right now?
Leslie: No. If you wanna fry every last brain cell in your head, go ahead. [pause; Rue laughs] What?
Rue: What?
Leslie: That's exciting to you, huh?
Rue: What?
Leslie: Being a crackhead.
Rue: I just feel like there's a catch here.
Leslie: I can't convince you that your life is important. You're gonna have to make that decision on your own. You'll be 18 soon... and outta my house. And you're gonna make whatever decisions you're gonna make. I'm taking you off my plate.
Rue: Okay.
Leslie: I'm gonna focus on Gia.
Rue: Yeah, but she's fine, though.
Leslie: She's been getting D's in math.
Rue: Yeah...
Leslie: She's been in detention three times in the past two weeks. And every morning, when I go into her room to make sure she's awake, she already up... on the phone. And I know she's not getting any sleep. But if you say she's fine... I'll just take your word for it.
Rue: I didn't know any of that.
Leslie: Why would you? You only ever think about yourself.
Rue: That's not true, Mom.
Leslie: If I have to choose between losing one daughter or two, I'mma fight to save her.
Rue: [thinks for a moment] No, that's fair.[Cassie is crying in her bedroom closet after Maddy learns the truth about her affair with Nate. Maddy bangs repeatedly on the door.]Maddy: Open the fucking door, Cassie! Open the door and tell me it was worth it! You owe me that! [tries opening the closet door] Open the fucking door, Cassie! What kind of fucking friend are you? What the fuck?! [pause] This isn't about Nate. This is about you and me and our friendship. And if you wanna throw it away, then fine. 'Cause I don't wanna be fucking friends with you.
Kat: Come here, babe. Let it go.
Maddy: I'm just sick of it. I'm sick of it. He put me through hell and now he's with my fucking best friend? Like, what the fuck?!
Kat: It's fuckеd up.
Maddy: When is it gonna end?
Kat: It's fuckеd up.
Maddy: [to Cassie] Open the fucking door, Cassie! Open the fucking door!
Kat: She's not gonna open it. Let's just go.
Maddy: Open the door! [bangs on the door]Kat: Maddy, come on.
Maddy: [to Cassie] You're a fucking coward. You're a fucking coward, and I would've never done this to you! I would've never done this to you![Nate gets offended by the homoerotic jock dance number in Lexi's play]Cassie: Nate...?
Nate: Why the fuck are they laughing? That shit is so fucking homophobic.[Nate gets up and leaves the auditorium. Cassie quickly follows him.]Cassie: Babe, I'm so sorry. I had no idea Lex–
Nate: She's your fucking sister!
Cassie: No, I–
Nate: You know what? Pack your shit, get the fuck outta my house. I'm fucking done.
All My Life, My Heart Has Yearned for a Thing I Cannot Name [2.08]
Lexi: Do you ever think about the future?
Fezco: Yeah, all the time.
Lexi: Really?
Fezco: Yeah.
Lexi: Like you have a plan?
Fezco: I mean, I don’t–I don’t got, like, a plan-plan, but I be thinkin' about livin' on a farm, you know?
Lexi: I don’t really see you as a farmer.
Fezco: Yeah, fuck it. Get some horses, cows, pigs, chickens, goats. Have a little family. Like some Little House on the Prairie type shit, you know?
Lexi: I don’t know if I know that show.
Fezco: You never heard of Little House on the Prairie?
Lexi: Okay, this might sound kinda crazy, but my plan is to have, like, three kids at 30. Like, each one a year and a half apart. So from 30 to 58, I can focus on, you know, being a good mom and raising my kids, etcetera, etcetera. And then, drop the last one off at college at 58, which will give me, like, 32 years to focus on me and live my life and take my time with writing.
Fezco: I mean, you really got this shit all figured out, huh?
Lexi: Yeah. [laughs] It’s kinda crazy, right?
Fezco: I mean… they got three kids in that show. There’s no need to forget your manners just because we’re hundreds of miles from civilized folk.
Lexi: If you lived in a place like this, do you think you’d have a gun?
Fezco: Hell yeah, I’d own a gun.
Lexi: I hate guns.
Fezco: Nobody’s ever got shot at and thought to theyself, “Whoa! Thank goodness we didn’t have a gun to shoot back.” You know?
Lexi: Yeah, but then what are the police for?
Fezco: Fucked if I know. Shit.
Lexi: Wait, are you on Instagram or Twitter?
Fezco: Hell nah.
Lexi: Really?
Fezco: Yeah.
Lexi: Why?
Fezco: Well, why would I want anybody knowin’ what I’m thinkin’ or feelin’?
Lexi: I don’t know. You can connect with people who have similar interests.
Fezco: Mmm... I just feel like people be sharin’ way too much on there.
Lexi: Online?
Fezco: Yeah. They be ruinin’ the mystery, you know? Like, say if I like a girl. I wanna find out what she’s about on my own, you know? I don’t wanna Google the scraps. I wanna peel back the layers.
Lexi: Yeah, but like, why would you wanna waste time getting to know someone… if you don’t have anything in common with them?
Fezco: I don’t know. That’s what I like about you the most, though. Like… we don’t really have nothin’ in common.
Lexi: That’s not true. We both… have the same sense of humor, and… are empathic and curious. [laughing] And wanna have, like, kids.
Fezco: Those aren’t interests, you know. Those are real character traits. That’s the important shit that people don’t post online.
Lexi: Yeah, I never thought about it that way.
Fezco: Well, aren't you glad that we became friends?
Lexi: Yeah… very much so.
Fezco: Yeah, me too.
Cassie: Lexi, I’m gonna fucking kill you! [walks on stage] I deserve this, right? Because I’ve actually lived a life? I’m the one who takes risks? I’m the one who falls in love?! I’m the one who gets hurt, not you, Lexi! You never even fucking lived! That’s why you’re able to stand up here and judge all of us! You’re just a fucking bystander! [scoffs when the audience boos her] Oh, okay... Well, if that makes me a villain, then so fucking be it. I can play the fucking villain.
Cassie: Lexi, is this the part of the play where I steal Jake from Marta?
Lexi: No, Cassie, that’s not in the play.
Maddy: It is now![The audience jeers]Suze: Who said that?
Hallie: Look, I wanna say, I get it.
Cassie: Oh, God…
Hallie: I understand what you’re going through.
Cassie: I do not wanna hear from you.
Hallie: I lived it.
Girl in the Audience: Wait, Hallie steals Marta’s boyfriend?
Cassie: I don’t know how many times I have to say this. They were not fucking together.
Maddy: Yeah, not only that, but she was fucking him the entire time Marta was talking about getting back together with him.
Girl in the Audience: No… Why?
Maddy: Because Hallie is a two-faced cunt.
Cassie: I’m not a cunt! You’re the cunt!
Maddy: You’re the fucking cunt, bitch!
Cassie: I am not a fucking cunt!
Suze: Language, missy! [pause] Okay. Okay, you know what? You’re just fucking embarrassing yourself. Let’s go home.
Cassie: I’m not going home. The play’s not over.
Lexi: Oh, my God. I feel like I’m gonna throw up.[Nate confronts Cal at the warehouse he's been living in]
Nate: You know what I think we have in common? When we both get off on hurting other people. What do you think?
Cal: You wanna talk about this upstairs?
Nate: No. [beat; knocks on table] So, you living here now?
Cal: For the moment, yeah.
Nate: You happy?
Cal: I’m figuring it out.
Nate: [pause] Are you happier?
Cal: Why don’t we go talk about this upstairs?
Nate: It’s a simple question.
Cal: Yes… In some ways.
Nate: That’s not fair.
Cal: I know.
Nate: You don’t get to ruin our lives... and then, just... move on and get to be happier.
Cal: I’ve made a lot of mistakes.
Nate: [to Cal's lovers] When I was eleven years old… I found these videos of my dad fucking hookers in a motel room. You know, for the longest time, I had this recurring nightmare, just over and over… and in it, he was fucking me the way that he fucked them. Did I ever tell you about that, Dad?
Cal: I think it’s time that… uh, that everybody go. Um... I need to talk to my son....Nate: I spent my whole life trying to protect you. And instead of loving me, you fucking hated me for it.
Cal: I’m not proud of the person I’ve been. I know that I’ve hurt you.
Nate: I don’t wanna hear it.
Cal: I tried to keep it separate. I failed. I fucked up, Nate… but I love you. I love you, and I should’ve protected you. I should’ve kept you safe, and I didn’t. I didn’t. And there’s nothing I regret more.
Nate: I don’t want your apology. I just want revenge.
Cal: What does that mean? [pause; Nate takes out a flash drive] What is that?
Nate: It’s everything. Everything.[Cal sees police sirens in the distance]Cal: Nate… don’t do this. Nate, look at me. Do not do this. Nate, don’t do this. I’m–I’m begging you. Don’t do this.
Nate: You are… who you are. I don’t think you’re ever gonna change.
Cassie: You know what's funny? Nate broke up with me before I even went on that stage.
Maddy: Don't worry. This is just the beginning.
Rue: I think your play was the first time I was able to look at my life and not hate myself… for everything I’ve done.
Lexi: What do you mean?
Rue: I don't know. I’ve been through a lot, and I don’t know what to do with it. You’ve been through a lot, and you do know what to do with it.
Lexi: But you’ve been through a lot and you know what to do with it.
Rue: I don’t know about that. [pause] Lex, look what you made. I don’t know how to do that. I don’t know how to get to where you are. But I just wanted you to know that seeing it meant the world to me.[After Lexi's play ends, Jules approaches Rue in the now empty auditorium]
Jules: I know that you're probably still angry with me, but I wanna tell you that I love you and I miss you... so much.[Rue looks at Jules for a few moments, then kisses her forehead and leaves the auditorium]Rue: [V.O.]'' Jules was my first love. I’d like to remember it that way. I don’t know if that’s actually true, though. I think I was high for too much of it. I know it wasn’t easy for her... and I hope she forgives me. I stayed clean through the rest of the school year. I wish I could say that was a decision I made. In some ways, it was just easier. I don’t know if this feeling will last forever... but I am trying. I remember Ali said, “The thought of maybe being a good person, is what keeps me trying to be a good person.” Maybe there’s something to that.
