Lassie is an American television series created by Robert Maxwell and Rudd Weatherwax. It was broadcast by CBS from September 12, 1954 to March 21, 1971; new episodes continued to air in first-run syndication until March 24, 1973. 591 episodes aired in all. Quotes Season 1 "Arithmetic" [1.2] Gramps: Watcha doin'? Jeff: Arithmetic. Gramps: How ya comin'? Jeff: Pretty good. Do you know anything about fractions? Gramps: Uh, well, what do you wanna know? Jeff: Well, if something is times something, it's more than something that's plus something. Right? Gramps: Em, eh, say that again. Jeff: Well, four times four is sixteen, and four plus four is only eight. Sixteen is more than eight, so that makes times more than plus, right? Gramps: Yep, got to agree with that. Jeff: Then how come they say that one-half plus one-half is one, and one-half times one-half is only a quarter? Gramps: Eh, who says that? Jeff: My teacher and my book. Gramps: Let me see it. Huh! That don't make sense! You can't multiply a half a dollar by a half a dollar and come out with a quarter. Jeff: Then how come it says so in the book? Gramps: Um, ain't got my specs; can't read a word. Jeff: They're right in your pocket! Gramps: Well, I ain't got time. You wanna go to the circus? "The Contest" [1.16] Jeff: … I hate her. Ellen: I know, I know, darling, but hating isn't gonna help. Jeff, will you listen to me? Maybe this is our chance to do something for Melanie. She's run away. … She's a terribly unhappy and terribly frightened little girl. I'd like you and Gramps to go down to the lake and bring her back. I could go, but that wouldn't help. I want her to know that you can be big enough and generous enough to forgive her for what she did. Jeff: I can't, Mom. She almost killed Lassie. Please don't make me. Ellen: You know I won't ever make you do anything, darling. What I'm asking is as much for you as it is for Melanie. You see, part of growing up and being a nice person is understanding other people's faults. That's why I want you to go and bring her back. I want her to know that no matter what she did, that she can still have friends. And she needs friends, Jeff. She needs them desperately. "The Brat" [1.18] Gramps and Porky carry heavy rocks to a toy wagon. Gramps: You do this every day, Porky, and you'll lose some of that fat. Porky: [after wiping his brow] I'd rather be fat. Season 2 "The Pit" [2.2] After Jeff and Porky describe their run-in with two bull terriers. Jeff: Gramps, what were they? Gramps: Well, the way you two describe 'em, they coulda been anything from woodchucks to hippopotamuses. Clay: He's right, Ellen: It's really no place for a woman. Ellen: "No place for a woman." Just where is there a place for a woman? No, don't tell me, I know: cooking and cleaning and washing and darning your old socks. "The Trial" [2.20] George: You're the one who don't understand, Emmett. I was born on this land, I married on it, I raised a family on it. And moreover I intend to die on it. No, my farm ain't for sale. Season 4 "Transition" [4.13] Jeff: Lassie, now listen: You stay with Timmy, girl. Take real good care of 'im. You always took care of me. And I'll come back to see you sometime—real soon. Goodbye, girl. "The Hungry Deer" [4.28] Ruth: Paul wants them to behave like children and think like adults; it can't be done. Season 5 "The Puppet" [5.30] Timmy: I'm Timmy, and this is Lassie. Ventrilo: And I am Ventrilo, the world's greatest ventriloquist. How do you do? Timmy: How do you do? Lassie wants to shake hands. Ventrilo: Well, I'm flattered! This is an unexpected pleasure. To shake one sincere paw makes up for a lifetime of grasping, demanding hands. Please consider me a most grateful friend. Lassie: [barks once] "Swami" [5.37] Paul: Well, being alone once in a while is good for all of us. It gives us a chance to meditate. Ruth: Well, maybe that's what Lassie does while we're at church. Season 6 "The Flying Machine" [6.7] Ruth: Timmy, you should know that any time you do anything dangerous like that, Lassie would risk her life for you. I think you should all learn to have more consideration for those who love you. "Space Traveler" [6.18] Timmy: Is that what I am? "Contaminated"? Col. Mitchell: You're radioactive, son. Contaminated by this guinea pig here. Quotes about Lassie I did Lassie for six years and I never had anybody come up to me and say, 'It made me want to be a farmer.'
