Quotes
The unconditional respect for the "other" [is a] objective, I believe, represents a fixed point not only for the legitimate and indisputable protection of the values and rules on which Freemasonry bases its existence, but, more generally, for the defense of a world in which freedom, the choice of an idea and a path of life, they can be used without limits and conditions of any kind.

Culture is Italy's oil, and it must be exploited.

My "political education" was born when I was a boy. I was monarchist for a period between eleven and twelve years, and of Young Italy for a period between thirteen and fourteen years, therefore close to the MIS. I had very confused ideas and the only thing that was clear was that, since I am a Protestant, I could not be a Christian Democrat. So, not being a Christian Democrat and never having had a penchant for communism, I inevitably had to swing, as you can say. When Italy changed around the mid-1950s, my political education was done in two newspapers: Baldacci's Il Giorno, which was different from the Corriere della Sera my father read, and Enrico Benedetti's L'Espresso.

Throughout the history of Republican Italy, De Martino was not only one of the most eminent figures of the socialist movement, but also one of the main protagonists of the country's democratic life.

With communism gone, people no longer have any reason to endure an improper tax on democracy.

Craxi pensava che avrebbe dominato meglio i suoi uomini se avessero avuto certe caratteristiche psicologiche.
Craxi thought he would dominate his men better if they had certain psychological characteristics.
There was someone more arrogant than the others but everything was then very forced. Sociological studies could be done on the way certain things have been edited and used, not just on socialists.
[On the reasons that allowed the birth of the "Clean Hands" investigation] People accepted certain behaviors because they wanted to prevent the Cossacks from arriving at St. Peter's. But when it became clear that the Cossacks were gone, we would have to comply. I thought that in a couple of years we could correct a lot of things. Instead, there was no time because everything went downhill much more quickly. Yalta's shadow cast over Yalta and the post-communists took advantage of it. Since they were unable to send us away with the dissent our behaviors should or could have created, they took us out a little earlier and with other systems.
It's hard to think of a party of socialists without first defeating those who annihilated them. At this point it is inevitable to ally with Berlusconi.
I've made mistakes, but they're the ones you pay for politically. I lost votes and I also gained them. It's the voter who counts.

Forza Italia was born old, a jumble of remnants of the First Republic.
Giuliano Amato?
Giuliano Amato? He forgot that he was Craxi's real right-hand man and left with the post-communists after what they had done at the PSI.
Io no.
Men fall into two broad categories, lasers and dispersives. Bettino belonged to the former: he chose a goal and focused on that without taking care of the details. In politics it is a very effective system. I belong to the second one. I'm curious, I go in all directions and disperse. But in the moment of misfortune it is easier to hold up being made like me than as Bettino was made. In fact Bettino broke. I don't.
[On Rocco Buttiglione] He has the unbearable pretense of appearing a philosopher when he is at most a philosophy professor. And the same goes for Cacciari.
The financing of politics: for 50 years it has happened outside the laws. Money came from the CIA to the DC and from the USSR to the PCI.
Poor De Lorenzo. They made a monster out of it. He had put some of his own in it, a few ill-advised interviews, a few jokes. And then, in Naples, he had a little more illicit funding. As the health minister, he lent himself to a story that affected the people. [...] It is proven that all the majority and opposition parties were in that mechanism. But only poor De Lorenzo got in the way.
All these years I have been very reticent to talk about Clean Hands. I could have done as Cirino Pomicino did, filling books to tell facts, shortcomings, omissions, instrumentalizations that modify a little the picture that Travaglio, Gomez and Barbacetto make of it.
Lino Jannuzzi preso e portato in Lombardia, Gabriella Carlucci presa e portata a Trani.
I have always fought against the majority. Today, post-communists can elect not only Di Pietro in Mugello, but also Giorgianni in Fano. And Berlusconi can easily have one from the South elected in the North East and one from the North in Sicily. Lino Jannuzzi taken and taken to Lombardy, Gabriella Carlucci taken and taken to Trani.
Io voglio molto bene a Sergio Cofferati.
I love Sergio Cofferati very much. He is the Italian trade unionist with whom I felt most consonant, as a minister. [...] It's self-contradictory, it wasn't consistent with what he thought and what I think he still thinks.
Italy, from Yalta, emerged with a particular statute, the de facto, though not geographical, division like that of Germany.

In politica mors tua vita mea.
[On Claudio Martelli] It's not a turncoat. In politics mors tua vita mea. Someone had taken him by the butt telling him he was going to be the Italian Clinton. And then he got the warranty notice and it went off.
The Second Republic is the worst aspect of the first. There is very little again: Bossi, the League, Berlusconi.
[On Paul Flores d'Arcais] I know him too well, I remember him as a Trotskyist, a socialist, a Martellian, a Craxi flatterer, a Craxi denier.
We cannot allow the judiciary to take the place of politics.
Passava uno in motoretta e gridava: "Ladro! Ladro!".
I went from negative bias to positive bias. One would pass by on the motor and shout: "Thief! Thief!". Today people stop me in the street and say, "Why don't you come back?"
