Dialogue
[Colonel John Henry Thomas and two other U.S. Army cavalry troopers ride in under flag of truce, approaching the battered remnants of a Confederate Army infantry unit]
CS Sergeant: I be a sergeant, sir; can I be of any service to y'all?
Colonel John Henry Thomas: I'd like to speak to your commanding officer.
CS Sergeant: [to another Confederate soldier] Who be givin' orders today, Jim?
[A Confederate officer comes forward, addressing Col. Thomas]
CS Major: Yes, sir?
Col. Thomas: Major, I've just received word that Lee surrendered to Grant three days ago.
CS Major: Yes, sir.
Col. Thomas: You knew it?
CS Major: We received word yesterday.
Col. Thomas: I don't think you understand, Major; the war is over.
CS Major: No, sir.
Col. Thomas: Are you telling me that you intend to keep fighting?
CS Major: Haven't we just proven it?
Col. Thomas: But why?
CS Major: Cause this is our land. And you're on it.
Col. Thomas: We're all Americans.
CS Major: Yes, sir. And that's always been the saddest part about it.
Col. Thomas: Good day, sir.
[Col. Thomas and the two men riding with him go to leave; the Confederate officer reaches out, offering his hand]
CS Major: Colonel- thank you for your courtesy.
