Cheryl Selase Ntumy is a Ghanaian fiction author. Quotes If anything I’m inspired by real life, the news, things I hear about or see With speculative fiction I think sometimes people get snagged on the unfamiliar details and can’t get past that, and then they miss the point I think it’s important for people to know that black stories are universal, that we’re not a niche market, we’re not a minority God bless the internet. I am eternally grateful for the opportunities it has created, as a writer and as a reader. There’s a whole world out there that I’d never have known about otherwise An Interview With Cheryl S Ntumy n.d There is so much chaos and uncertainty in living, in life and writing for me feels like it’s possible to tame the wild of life into patterns and words, into beauty.  I can’t help it; I have to write. During the period when I’m working on a new story, I don’t read, it helps to keep my voice my own and not to have it influenced by other voices. I write constantly. I’m obsessed with bettering my craft. When I’m not writing I’m reading. It’s important to be voracious in your reading. It makes you a better writer. I don’t think it’s true. Africans are natural storytellers. We believe strongly in the power of a story. That’s how we convey warnings to our kids, how we document our history. We’re imaginative and playful and sometimes terrifying in our storytelling. I think that perhaps the ways that some books are written do not cater for us and therefore feel alienating. I love wordsmiths. I love their ability to string together words that paint such vivid pictures and tug at our heartstrings. I love wordplay and double and triple entendre. Writers who do that are superhuman in my eyes. My favourite to write is fantasy. I don’t particularly know why but every time I write something it ends up being a fantasy story. I don’t think I have a favourite to read. It depends on my mood at the time. “Africans are natural storytellers”: Botho Lejowa,August 12 2021 Category:People from Ghana Category:Authors
