Rafaravavy Rasalama (Rasalama)
Rafaravavy Rasalama, often called Rasalama, was the first Christian martyr in Madagascar. She is a significant figure in the history of Malagasy Christianity and is remembered for her courage, faith, and sacrifice under persecution.
Early Life and Conversion
Rasalama was born around 1810–1812 in Madagascar.
Her early education came through village schools established by the London Missionary Society (LMS) in 1824.
When her family relocated to Manjakaray, on the outskirts of Antananarivo, she joined the Christian community in Ambodin’Andohalo, close to the royal palace.
In May 1831, she was baptized, making her one of the first Malagasy Christians.
On 5 June 1831, she participated in the Lord’s Supper at Ambatonakanga, the first church established by missionaries.
