thumb|Eugenio Scalfari in 2011 Eugenio Scalfari (6 April 1924 – 14 July 2022) was an Italian journalist. He was editor-in-chief of L'Espresso (1963–1968), a member of Parliament in Italy's Chamber of Deputies (1968–1972), and co-founder of La Repubblica and its editor-in-chief (1976–1996). He was known for his meetings and interviews with important figures, including Pope Francis, Enrico Berlinguer, Aldo Moro, Umberto Eco, Italo Calvino, and Roberto Benigni. Looking closely, Trump cultivates a dictatorial tendency: a boss and America, no party, a personal staff made up of finance men and a few military personnel who have the sole virtue of a personal friendship with him. He is against the American establishment and Americans evidently like that. Trump's populism meets the populism of a tragically declining middle class and also the youth. They can't stand a ruling class. Now, however, that definition has been replaced by another: it is no longer called snobbish but instead radical-chic. It's not a synonym, there's something more and it's a political dimension: radical chic is left-wing. Of a certain left. To earn that definition, it must first amaze and disorient the true left, which, by ancient definition, identifies with Marxist ideology. Ebbene sì, siamo radical-chic, Espresso.it, 10 April 2012. Even science, unlike philosophy, seeks ultimate truth, not by handling ideas, concepts, words, but by using numbers, formulas, equations, powers. Science's gamble is to discover the key capable of opening all doors, up to the last one that holds the golden number, the final formula, the law that clarifies and reveals the last unknown. This is why the Church does not feel threatened by science: in fact, they pursue the same goal. Quando Dio cantò l'algebra, L'espresso, n°. 39, year LII, 5 October 2006, p. 234. Berlusconi is a nice and kind person, with traits of generosity and a high level of entrepreneurial ability in his sector. There is only one problem, and that is that Berlusconi is a twenty-four-carat banana man, that is, a businessman who does his business with politics. Berlusconi is a rubber man where Mussolini posed as an iron man. Berlusconi floats and masters democracy by trying to make it invertebrate; Mussolini destroyed democracy. Mussolini wanted an ethical state, Berlusconi supported his power over the incompatibility of Italians with the state, except to adopt statism when a frightened society invoked him as the protector of last resort. These are, as can be seen, profound differences even if the goal is similar: a charismatic Chief, plebiscited by a people who have renounced being a people and have transferred their sovereignty en masse to the Chief. Ciampi was the father of the Italians. He never cheered for this or that part since the dominant ever present in all his public roles was always the general interest and that for the poor, the weak, the excluded. [...] He took two degrees, one in Literature and the other in Law, and even that double choice was no coincidence: he loved culture and legality, and both fueled his life. Colombo revealed to the public his homosexuality and also, albeit briefly, his condition as a cocaine user. I believe in Golgotha because the sacrifice of a righteous, a weak, a poor was celebrated there. That sacrifice is repeated every day and is the true and only sin of the world: the sacrifice, the oppression, the humiliation of the poor, the weak, the just. Golgotha depicts the sin of the world. Ragionando con Martini di peccato e Resurrezione, repubblica.it, 13 May 2010. (About Pope Francis) He is as good as Pope John, he fascinates people like Wojtyła, he grew up among the Jesuits, he chose to call himself Francis because he wants the Church of the Poor Man of Assisi. Finally: he is as pure as a dove but as cunning as a fox. Fede e ragione. (Referring to Antonio Maccanico) We were very young when we met. We liked girls but at that time it wasn't easy to make love to each other, we took them to the cinema or on good weather evenings for a walk in Roman parks, Villa Borghese, the Pincio, the Janiculum, a few kisses and the desires of age which however remained unsatisfied. Then we would tell each other about our exploits by showering them with non-existent details. Jesus said many things. Perhaps lay people should promote a mass gathering named after him to see how far the Church today still has the right to use him. And to understand whether camels can pass through the eye of the needle or whether that eye has not become a wide highway where camels gallop through with all the cargo of their rich merchandise. Ah, Narciso! Quanti guai combini nella vita delle persone. I saw and listened to Otto e mezzo Dario Fo talking about Grillo. With all due respect: but is it ever possible? An actor with a worthy history of theatre behind him and also of thought. Is it ever possible? Ah, Narcissus! How much trouble you cause in people's lives. I have an Enlightenment culture and I don't seek God. I think God is a consoling and fascinating invention of the mind of men. Fede e ragione. Radical chics are a definition coined by the populist and populist right that has however also found some correspondence in official Marxism. Ebbene sì, siamo radical-chic, Espresso.it, 10 April 2012. The lexicon [...] is one with the thought it expresses in words, it constitutes the manifestation of thought and therefore of the substance of the fact and its truth. If the lexicon is wrong, this means that the thought it expresses is wrong and does not contain a truth but rather an error. The problem of how to get out of the «Years of Lead», from this «Night of the Republic», has been posed to us and we have posed it many times, especially with respect to the hypotheses of amnesty or other similar solutions. I believe we need to start from an essential point: whether Italy had a civil war in those years or a large, bloody, horrendous series of common crimes. Personally, I have always believed that there was no civil war: fortunately, the conditions for it were lacking. I only stopped being a Fascist when I was expelled from it, when, in fact, I was put out of the party. And I have to say I was very sorry about that. It was a pain inflicted on my youth to see the stars torn from my shoulder pads, a defeat that generated a profound crisis in me. The song preserves memory. Looking closely, it is a container of memory, probably the most perfect for stimulating that part of the brain that preserves memories of the past, faces, places, events, loves and pains, in short, the biography of people. Italian corruption is a phenomenon that stems directly from the state's estrangement from the people, from the existence of a ruling class barricaded in defense of its privileges, from the appropriation of public resources by the powerful in power, from the proliferation of corporations with their own deontologies, statutes, and privileges; from organized crime governed by its own laws and codes. The recent publication of Baruch Spinoza's complete works in Mondadori's "Meridiani" is an important event in Italian culture, not only because of the vastness of the apparatus, the critical completeness of the texts, the quality of the commentaries, and in particular the introductions to the individual works and the general one, by Filippo Mignini. The event lies in the very fact of the publication. Here and now, it occurs to say. Because here and now Spinoza's philosophy is once again going through an attractive phase, I would say in tune with the ways of feeling of the era in which we live; but this harmony, however, is not conscious and therefore inadequate, not even in the society of the cultured and philosophers, with some important exceptions among which we should point out that of Emanuele Severino, who has always been an attentive and acute scholar of Spinoza. Spinoza. The radicality of Spinozian thought towards salvation, anthropomorphism and the centrality of man in the world. There has so far been no philosophy more distant, more indifferent, indeed more committed to demonstrating that our species cannot boast any privileges and any dominant position in the universe. Not only that: he cannot appeal to or hope for any God who can secure our salvation and point the way. But, at the same time, a philosophy dedicated to the demonstration that "God is there" as one would say today, and indeed is present in everything and everywhere, eternal and absolute, the only existing substance, of which the entire universe is pervaded even in its most intimate particles. Spinoza. Rationality is no longer part of our intellectual and moral baggage. Rationality has been beaten on all sides; accused of being at the origin of crimes and the most serious of all – that of pride. Thus the light of reason has been extinguished, new ideologies have installed themselves in place of those that have collapsed into ruin, fundamentalisms of all kinds have taken the place of tolerance and legal certainty. The media circuits have dealt with this devastation and, with very rare exceptions, they still continue in this amplifying and instigating function of the worst, crediting and ventilating versions of the facts devoid of truth and reason. The revolution is never accomplished with the golden days of wine and roses, but through a long journey for dark, confused, muddy and sometimes bloody years. Those who find themselves experiencing it as protagonists, as victims, or more simply as spectators can hardly have an awareness of motion and a sense of current. At most he can notice that the stagnant waters of the marsh have transformed into rushing, cool streams under whose thrust the old embankments are perilous. The excellent Berlusconi is travelling towards a European television project. Here, it already has all the private networks that matter in its hands, three in number; it has put down roots in Paris and is about to put them in Madrid as well. In all three countries, his "patrons" are socialists, but Berlusconi is not a socialist: he is a businessman; he allies himself with those who support him; at most, he becomes a partner, always ready to change companies if the wind changes direction. So everyone does it, it's normal. The ploy of having some intransigent praetor, largely supported by the RAI party, black out Berlusconi's screens is worn out. That's not the problem. The problem instead concerns two key points: the concentration of networks in one hand and advertising crowding in broadcasts. He [Pope Francis] is no longer the Vicar of Christ on earth, but the Vicar of God because Christ is but the love of God, not a different God who incarnated, lived 33 years [...] and was crucified. Papa Francesco . Tutto sta a come saranno organizzate queste primarie. I still have to examine the three questions proposed at the signature tables by Beppe Grillo. In fact, many who have signed distinguish the signing of those questions from adherence to "Grillismo". The distinction is absolutely legitimate: it can also be signed by evaluating the "Vaffa" movement for what it is. But let us examine those three questions in substance. The first stipulates that all citizens running for elected office must be chosen through preliminary primary elections. This principle seems to me to be worthy of acceptance. The Democratic Party, for example, has decided to make it its own. It's all about how these primaries will be organized. Grillo, for example, called Pannella and Di Pietro's exclusion from the Democratic Party leadership candidacies a "scoundrel," ignoring the fact that both are members of other parties and, in fact, lead them and have not agreed to abandon them when they run. As if one of our condominium owners, invoking this qualification, claimed to decide strictly family matters together with us and our children. Where is the logic? The second question prohibits Members of Parliament from serving on it for more than two terms. This ban is pure nonsense. It would force us to give up sometimes valuable experiences. Perhaps also to many vices acquired during the exercise of the mandate. But those vices cannot be presupposed and entrusted to the automatism of a norm. It is up to voters to discern between vices and virtues and decide on their vote. Furthermore, such an automatic rule would be unconstitutional because it would deprive voters of an essential right: the ability to vote for whoever they want. What would have happened, for example, if in the early 1950s Christian Democrat voters had been prevented from voting a third time for De Gasperi, Communist voters for Togliatti, Socialists for Nenni, and Republicans for Pacciardi or La Malfa? The third question – preventing those convicted from the first degree of jurisdiction from being part of Parliament – seems at first glance unobjectionable. For all crimes? And from the first degree of jurisdiction? The presumption of innocence is a principle enshrined in our Constitution; to change it, a constitutional law is needed; ordinary law is not enough. Should opinion crimes be sanctioned like others? When Gramsci, Pertini, Saragat, Pajetta, were arrested, I believe that the voters of those parties would have voted for them and sent them to Parliament if an elected Parliament had still existed and if those parties had not been dissolved by force. Personally, I had a somewhat similar experience: I entered the Chamber of Deputies in 1968 in the wake of the Sifar-De Lorenzo scandal despite or precisely because I had been convicted in the first instance by the Rome court. I remember it because it is a very small example of an aberrant proposal. Mussolini and fascism wanted to build a new man, inspired by the values of force, duties to the state, the culture of war and conquest, the ideals of imperialism, the myth of imperial Rome. They devoted the greatest care to educating young people about these values and this mythology. The successes they achieved proved ephemeral as soon as they encountered the harshness of reality. Berlusconism, on the other hand, aimed to deconstruct the relationship between the individual and the community, deconstruct ideologies, exalt immediate happiness in the immediate present, anti-politics, pragmatism as the sole foundation of individual decisions, and transformism as a daily practice. Public bribing as a venial sin. Ci inventiamo i desideri. We make it up... what do we make it up? We make up our own desires. Not the first needs, basic needs, because we have those too, like animals. The poor, except for a very few, have no secondary needs. From an interview by Tv2000it, 14 February 2016. Video disponibile su Youtube.com (min. 25:37). I was never ashamed of that youth in the Guf, on the contrary: all that proudly fascist being of mine then made my anti-fascism solid. From an interview by Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, Ero giovane, fascista e felice. Personally, I wrote for some fascist newspapers, especially Nuovo Occidente and Roma Fascista. Political journalism began to attract me from then on and I practiced it with great satisfaction. However, it lasted just over a year, at the end of which I was called by the deputy general secretary of the fascist party and expelled by him from the GUF (Fascist University Youth), for an article in which I criticized some hierarchs who, according to rumors in circulation, had illicitly appropriated many millions of lire by speculating on the construction of the EUR. This news had been written by me in an editorial in Roma Fascista and this was the cause of my expulsion from the Guf. I experienced two days of great bitterness which was suddenly replaced not only by a calm but by a new motivation for my political thought: I told myself that evidently the deputy secretary of the party knew much more about fascism than I did and if he had expelled me it was a sign that I was not a fascist but rather its opposite. Putin, as I called him a while ago, is a rattlesnake surrounding his opponents, not always the rattlesnake bites venomously. Often, especially if caressed, it casually surrounds the body of the person who bears it, but it can strike by surprise and bite with poisonous bites and thus kill. And so it happened, the snake with its venomous bite struck, the military aggression against Ukraine was and still is in these hours of unprecedented violence. When I find in a book a sentence or line that for some reason strikes me and gives me emotion, I transcribe them into a notebook. I've already filled four of them and I think there are too many because the poetic words and phrases that truly touch you deeply can only be few. These young people also teach something in operational terms. The siege of Springer's printing houses to block the release of his newspapers is a new means of struggle far more sophisticated and effective than nineteenth-century barricades or general strikes. A «refined» system is responded to with «refined» reprisals. The example is contagious. On Friday evening in Milan, a procession of students marching to demonstrate under the German consulate stopped for a long time and tumultuated under the Corriere della Sera building. It can be a warning to all those big news chains that have been accustomed for a very long time now to hiding information and manipulating public opinion. Assuming it ever existed, one-dimensional society is therefore shipwrecked. Those who love rich and full freedom can only rejoice in it and draw happy omens from it for the future.L'Espresso, 21 aprile 1968, citato in Indro Montanelli and Mario Cervi, L'Italia degli anni di piombo, Rizzoli, 1991. (Smentita da una nota del capo della Sala Stampa Vaticana) [Regarding Pope Francis] Anyone who has had, as I have had many times, the fortune of meeting him and speaking to him with the greatest cultural confidence, knows that Pope Francis conceives of Christ as Jesus of Nazareth, man, not God incarnate. Once incarnate, Jesus ceases to be a God and becomes a man until his death on the cross. Silvio Berlusconi has his own respectable concept of the media, which is based on two essential points. First point: the media are above all containers of advertising and must subordinate every other objective to the collection of advertising. Second point: the media must be a support tool and sounding boards for the dominant power groups. The tycoons of television and print media are part of the same galaxy populated by the other vested interests, the strong interests of the system. If the vote were held today, the poll says, 65 percent of those surveyed would give victory to the center-right, only 12 percent to the center-left. Others with somewhat different outcomes can certainly be opposed to this poll, but the common vision is that of a country agitated, driven by emotions and uncertainties, hopes and fears. It dominates –so it seems to me – an expectation of palingenesi with vaguely messianic nuances. How much worse. He even does them on himself and we laugh at each other by infecting all his faithful with that laughter. He's very happy that there's Grillo doing the damage on the left. But at the same time I hold him responsible for the ideological degradation of the Italian press, having linked the extraordinary success of a large, formally independent newspaper to the logic of political militancy to promote partisan and sometimes personal campaigns against opponents. Magdi Allam. Scalfari, since he no longer directs, gives report cards to everyone, even the Pope to whom he often gives theology lessons. He is a philosopher of press freedom. He is free. Se dovessi dargli un voto darei 10 come uomo d'affari. Otto come giornalista. Scalfari is very good. If I had to give him a grade I would give him a 10 as a businessman. Eight as a journalist. Five as a politician because he never guessed one. Eugenio has chosen to position himself editorially increasingly to the left. He did well. If he had made a less left-wing newspaper he wouldn't have been as successful as he was.
