As a Reading player, January 2021
It was more relief when I scored my first goal, to be honest. I played a lot of games last season, but didn't score at all so it was nice to get that first goal this season and it was a bit of a weight off my shoulders really.

On his decision to represent France, September 2024
I'm of the opinion that as a footballer, you have to give your answers on the pitch first and foremost. That's where I want to show what I can do and who I am.
December 2024
Both at the chess board and on the pitch, I'm a player who likes to attack, who attacks opponents and puts them under pressure. Unfortunately, I'm sometimes too fixated on attack in chess and forget that I also have to think about defence.
On chess and football, December 2024
In chess it's about planning your moves, figuring out exactly when and where each figure needs to be. Whereas on the grass, I often leave it to my instinct and do what feels right. Of course, as a team you have a plan that the coach gives you, but the individual steps are in the hands of every individual player. Sometimes it's a moment in which you don't think but just act instinctively that decides a match.
December 2024
My dad always spoke English with me at home, my mum French – and I always answered both in English. I feel very comfortable with French too.
On his multicultural upbringing, December 2024
As a child, Neymar was my favourite player. I liked his tricky style of play. You learn things from lots of players, though – that way you become complete.
On his football idol, December 2024
2025
If I know someone well enough, I'm quite open, free to talk about anything and everything. What would I say about myself? I'm very focused but relaxed, and I like to enjoy the things I do. In everyday life and in football. Enjoying life's little things and living in the moment.
March 2025
I have many different connections with Nigeria, Algeria, France, and England. It's not something I think about every day; it's perfectly normal for me. I carry little things from each country within me. It has broadened my horizons because these cultures are quite different from one another. At home, I had three cultures thanks to my parents. And outside, it was England, where I grew up. I didn't have to force this mix; it was just there.
On his upbringing, 2025
The Olympics were the best football experience of my life. It was fantastic, especially in France.
March 2025
If I'd had a traditional path, I would have been a very different person. It's rare to have a direct path. You have to take these challenges as lessons, things to learn and refine, rather than seeing them negatively; they can only help you in the rest of your career.
Reflecting on his career, March 2025
You'll knock on all your friends' doors to play in the street until the end of the day. We were always hanging out outside, playing, pushing each other, challenging each other.
On playing football with his brother as children, March 2025
I like players who play freely. I think people want entertaining football. I could maybe have been a midfielder. But a defender, never. I prefer everything related to attack.
March 2025
I try to leave aside anything that's a matter of luck; I prefer to create my own destiny rather than think it might just fall into my lap.
March 2025
When I played my first year as a pro, I realized that football was perhaps a little different from what I had imagined. It's quite serious, actually. I understood, I saw people... Some achieve more than you. You, you haven't done anything, you've just arrived. So I started working really hard. And never looking back.
March 2025
It's the future that drives me.
March 2025

On matching his boots with his kits, March 2025
Anything to do with sports appealed to me; I loved playing them all, and I was quite good at cricket. But I couldn't imagine being anything other than a footballer.
March 2025
I'm not as serious as I am in football. (Laughs) I manage to completely switch off. I think if you don't, you can go crazy. Sometimes you have to find a balance; football shouldn't devour your whole life. I'm getting closer to that balance, but it's difficult... But if it's something I haven't done for a long time, if it allows me to get out of the house and have fun, I can do it..."
March 2025
I remember the first call from Didier Deschamps. I was so happy. I'd wanted this since I was a kid. Then I saw my name on the jersey… I was more excited than scared.

I learned from football that it's a sport of opinions, that you have to keep doing what you believe is right. And that starts first and foremost with one essential thing for me: always being authentic.
On his advise to young footballers, March 2025

thumb|upright|Olise with Bayern Munich in 2026
Yes, I think it can be art. But for my part, I just consider myself a creative person. I don't see myself as an artist. That said, yes, I like football to be beautiful. For the fans, for those watching on TV who want to have a good time. I think football is a magnificent sport, and therefore it should be visually beautiful too.
On football being art, June 2026
I think I just like to take the ball and feel it before we really start playing. Yes, I like having the ball in my hands or at my feet, it's important to me. Usually, I do a few keepy-uppies to see how I feel on the pitch, a few passes against an advertising board, that sort of thing.
On warming up, June 2026
I'd say it comes from street football. We'd play in goal when we were young, outside with my brother, kicking the ball against the wall, doing one-on-ones, all that. I'd say it comes from there, yes. It's a different kind of football, but it's definitely a way to learn. Football, in those conditions, is just freedom. It wasn't learning in the strict sense either. I simply enjoyed playing football. I loved it, plain and simple. Well, I think everyone loves it when they're young.
On his style of play, June 2026
For now, I'd say, yes, I'm a player of the present. If I continue to work hard and stay grounded, then I hope to become a player of the future.
On being described by teammate Kylian Mbappe as "the player of today and the player of the future", June 2026
Maybe my play style gives the impression that things slow down. But when I am on the pitch, I do not know if things are slowing down. It is muscle memory. I play mostly through instinct.
On his play style, June 2026
It came from a conversation at the training ground at Palace. One of the coaches was talking about kaizen. Afterward, I looked into it. The idea of improving every day, little by little, until you reach a certain level. I relate to that philosophy.
On his kaizen tattoo, June 2026
She's very good at cards. She was the one who introduced me to chess when I was younger. And... life experience. She's always sending me quotes and stuff. Things I might think of myself but that no one ever really speaks to me about. She reinforces some... balance. Some grounding.
On his mother Mina, June 2026
We never talk about football to be honest. We are both in it so much. We talk about life. When you have a setback, take it as a lesson. Use it as time to grow. Someone always has something worse than what you are experiencing. There is no time to complain. Digest what happened, then move on.
On his brother Richard, June 2026
I don't know. I shoot, it goes in or it doesn't.
On how he scores brilliant goals, September 2026
Quotes about Olise
Football figures
2019
Michael is a very young, talented footballer. Age doesn't matter to me as a first team manager; when young players show me they have the talent, they will get opportunities to prove themselves at senior level - and Michael grabbed his chance with both hands.
José Gomes, July 2019
2020
He's a special player. He has so much talent... he can do whatever he wants in his career.
Mark Bowen, October 2020
Michael is super talented. [...] We acknowledge Michael's talent but he also has to keep learning. He still needs to grow. He still has things that he can implement in the future and be an even better player.
Veljko Paunović, December 2020
He was maybe the most wonderful and fantastic talent I've worked with. Michael is really special. He can see, even before receiving the ball, more options than regular players. His technical ability and speed, decision capacity is really, really good.
José Gomes, December 2020
2021
His love of football was always there. When you give him responsibility, he grows. His talent on the ball is exceptional. He deals with it really well. He manipulates the ball and finds spaces high up the pitch.
Scott Marshall, October 2021
From the minute you saw him, you could see that special ability. He's so comfortable on the ball. He's so confident, which sets him apart from other decent players I have played with. […] He's his own player, though, and wants to create an identity for himself — not to be compared to other people.
Tom McIntyre, October 2021
We'd say he's a bit weird sometimes because when he scored goals, he sometimes wouldn't celebrate. We'd be like, 'Mike, you've just scored an important goal and you're just walking back?'. What's he doing? Then he'd play two-touch with the manager (Veljko Paunović) in the gym, he'd win a point in that, and he'd be shouting and celebrating, but on a Saturday, he'd score a goal in front of the home end and just stand there. We never really worked out why. He could never give us an answer but he's just different; a special player.
Michael Morrison, October 2021
2022
Talking of talented young players: Michael Olise is very, very gifted.
Gary Lineker, January 2022
In the last 20 years I've had working with young players, I found him to be quite unique.
Mark Bowen, March 2022
That's who he is. That's his personality. You ask him the question, he'll give you the answer. He's not playing a game, that's Michael. He answered the question with honesty, that's the person he is.
Patrick Vieira on Olise's interview that went viral, November 2022
2023
I made it clear to him just how much I enjoy working with him and how much respect I have for him as a player and what potential I think he has.
Roy Hodgson, August 2023
2024
He's just one of them young players who need to be guided in the right way when he leaves Palace... [...] But when he leaves, if he picks the right team where he's allowed to express himself, he's going to be a superstar. He's that good. I remember watching him at the Etihad a couple of seasons ago. It's not just his dribbling, it's his decision-making – when to lay off the ball and his first touch is sublime. Yeah, he's going to the very top.
Micah Richards, February 2024
He was very skinny when he arrived [at Crystal Palace], but he went to the gym. He's a good guy, super intelligent. Technically, he can do everything.
Jean-Philippe Mateta, June 2024
His technique on the move, his agility, his dribbling skills, and his mental strength would have made him a valuable asset to my Nigeria team. We tried, but unfortunately, I didn't get him.
Gernot Rohr, June 2024
He's shy, doesn't talk much.
Bradley Locko, June 2024
I could talk about his game for hours. […] He's a top-quality player. So much the better for France.
Gaël Clichy, June 2024
I love him. If only he had Austrian roots! This player is exceptional: he's fast, strong in his dribbling, technically gifted, and he works hard when he loses possession. Every time I've seen him play, he's been smiling.
Ralf Rangnick, June 2024
Football fans know him because he's a player who shines in the Premier League. He's a fantastic player and a really good guy, humble and funny.
Alexandre Lacazette, August 2024
We're happy to be with him, he's endearing. Everyone wants to be with him... He talks to everyone... He's kind and friendly.
Manu Koné, September 2024
Michael is a very good person, we lived together for two months, he's a good guy.
Loïc Badé, September 2024
He has this shyness, but he's very endearing when you're around him every day. In fact, he's as reserved as he is endearing. It comes through his smiles, little things that speak louder than repeated phrases. He was very well-liked by his teammates, who didn't hesitate to tease him gently, and he was very receptive to that. We were away for quite a while for the Euros (2023, in Romania) and he was incredibly disciplined and respectful of the organisation. He participated in all group activities, even the ping-pong tournaments. He needs time to open up, but he quickly becomes the ideal teammate because he doesn't make a fuss.
Sylvain Ripoll, October 2024
He has a strong character on the pitch, takes charge of the game. Off the pitch, he's a calm, composed guy, a bit of a loner.
Wesley Fofana, October 2024
What you see on his face doesn't necessarily evoke much emotion, but he's a great guy who has integrated incredibly well.
Mattèo Guendouzi, October 2024
2025
For me the most impressive thing about him is that he gives the impression everything he does is easy. He has a certain nonchalance with the ball that when you watch him, you say: that's too easy for him. Michael is a fantastic player, we see him every weekend at Bayern, and now he's making a name for himself with the national team. Having him is an advantage for us.
Aurélien Tchouaméni, September 2025
I played with him for several years; he's a good guy. Technically, he has a high game IQ—he always makes the right decision. What he's doing at Bayern is amazing.
Jean-Philippe Mateta, October 2025
He's the leader of our WhatsApp group. Michael gets along well with everyone... He's the main communicator within the group; he's super cool.
Jonathan Tah, November 2025
It's true that you might think Michael is very reserved, but among us, at training or in the locker room, he's very open. He talks and laughs with everyone. He's a friend and he's always in a good mood. He likes to create a good atmosphere with music and a lot of lightheartedness.
Dayot Upamecano, November 2025

When he gets the ball, as a striker, your eyes light up because you know the ball is coming to you and something is going to happen.
Harry Kane, January 2026
In the dressing room, he's the complete opposite of the image the public has of him. He makes a lot of jokes and is very active with the team. Michael has a great sense of humour. He's very popular with the team and an outstanding footballer; he scores fantastic goals, provides assists, and is always there for the team.
Lennart Karl, March 2026
April–June
Olise certainly is up there with Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard amongst the best players I've ever worked with.
Roy Hodgson, April 2026
He's an outstanding player. For football fans everywhere, he's a pleasure to watch.
Luís Figo, April 2026
He's someone who's a bit in his own world, who has a different personality. But he's very endearing according to his teammates. They also say that in the group, he's kind of the joker. He's someone who doesn't like being in the spotlight which explains his attitude.
Samir Nasri, April 2026
He's a wonderful player. I also appreciate how reserved and almost media-shy he is. That's rare these days. He's a great guy, and on the pitch, he's outstanding, the way he plays football, almost magically. So it doesn't surprise me that he's incredibly popular and hyped among our fans.
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, April 2026
Michael has this dance-like, artistic, ease, magic quality. You can't learn that. Michael is a player who delivers, a performer.
Thomas Müller, May 2026
We don't realize what we're witnessing, he's an extraordinary player. I might be going a bit far, but I think there's a bit of Zizou in this guy in his somewhat nonchalant way of controlling the ball, playing with his body, moving between the lines, in his vision of the game. We are witnessing the birth of a star. We are at the beginning of what he is capable of doing. I think he really has something different. He is capable of doing everything! He can score, make passes, he runs.
Christophe Dugarry, May 2026
We had Platini, we had Zidane, now we have Olise.
Patrick Vieira, June 2026
He's the player of today and tomorrow. He has that elegance, that vision in his game. I get along very well with him. Now we speak French together. He speaks it well. Besides, he has this personality that means you in the media will never know if his French is improving or not, because he probably doesn't talk to you much (Smiles). He doesn't like it, that's just how he is. Michael is introverted. He saves his words. But his feet speak for him. Accept him as he is. He'll never change. In addition to being an extraordinary player, he's a great guy.
Kylian Mbappé, June 2026
Olise brings back the feeling of watching football, the taste of what we experienced as children: talent, freedom, quality, effectiveness. When he's not on the pitch, his absence is noticeable. When he's on, you sense that, at any moment, like Messi, he can do something unexpected. That's the modern football we love, the football that makes fans dream. Even the commentators are amazed by his technique. He's exceptional.
Claude Makelele, June 2026
He has magic. His shyness always disappeared when the ball appeared. That's when he transformed.
José Gomes, June 2026
He is a dream come true. He doesn't play the game, he thinks the game.
Thierry Henry, June 2026
He's not a very expressive character. He's rather introverted, but he's very endearing.
Didier Deschamps, June 2026
Oh Michael… I adore him! I've gotten to know him. He's not much of a talker, but he's very endearing, a truly unique personality. And he's an exceptional player; we're very lucky to have him with us.
Kylian Mbappé, June 2026
Michael Olise has something magical about him. His vision is incredible, he manages to do incredible things with his left foot […] With us on the pitch, he's an incredible person, and in the group as well.
Lucas Digne, June 2026
Michael is someone who thinks deeply about football. And nine and a half times out of ten, he makes the right decision. He has a feel for the game.
Patrick Vieira, June 2026
When Michael has the ball at his feet, something happens. He is never, and I mean never, a neutral player. There is something profoundly altruistic in his game. He puts this creativity at the service of others. An assist gives him as much pleasure as scoring a goal.
Patrick Vieira, June 2026
He doesn't play a selfish game. He's an instinctive player. [...] He's an artist; his game is absolutely not robotic.
Patrick Vieira, June 2026
He's an introvert, everyone knows that, but you can't reduce him to just that. [...] Don't imagine a shy man in person. Michael is a guy who knows what he wants (Laughs). And his only question was: 'How am I going to make it to the French national team?' And he knew he was going to make it. He has confidence in himself, and that's what allows him to thrive at Bayern Munich or with the French national team. But that confidence is based on his hard work.
Patrick Vieira, June 2026
He has character, yes, like the great players. He loves being on the field, the game, the ball. I remember at the beginning, he had his physical problems and we brought him on as a substitute, to protect him. He didn't like it, he wanted to play again right away. [...] The guy was giving you the cold shoulder a bit. Because what he wanted was to play. But he's not difficult to manage. You might perceive him, with his style, his glasses, his hoodie, as someone complicated, but not at all. For me, honestly, it was incredibly easy. I had zero problems. He's an endearing character.
Patrick Vieira, June 2026
He's one of the hardest-working players I know. He takes his job very seriously. I love his mindset.
Jamal Musiala, June 2026
July–September
thumb|upright|Olise in 2026
Olise is the best in the world, far ahead of everyone else. If he doesn't win the Ballon d'Or at the end of the year, something is seriously wrong with football.
Willy Sagnol, July 2026
Olise is a team player, not an individualist. For our children, there is finally a great role model. He doesn't care if he scores or assists, he always thinks about what helps the team. Zidane was the same.
Willy Sagnol, July 2026
He was the point guard - the Tom Brady of France. When you have a player like Olise, you don't think. Just run and the ball will arrive. It will arrive exactly where you want it.
Zlatan Ibrahimović, July 2026
What you see of him often seems very introverted, but at the same time he likes fashion, he likes to dress a bit more boldly. Then many have asked: Is he arrogant? And I'm like: No, man. He's such a lovely person, so polite. He's such a great guy and really funny. He just doesn't like cameras. He doesn't like sitting and talking in an interview. That actually makes him even more likeable to me. They want a little more from him and maybe they don't get it, but that has nothing to do with him being arrogant.
Jonathan Tah, July 2026
Michael Olise? He does pretty much everything on the pitch. He's very present defensively, and with the ball, he makes great passes, creates space, and is a real threat. It's a genuine pleasure to play with him.[...] He's a genius; I see him as a genius.
Bradley Barcola, July 2026
I can assure you that no sponsor and no journalist speaks ill of Michael's behavior.
Vincent Kompany, September 2026
Michael Olise is someone who wants to play football. Off-field stuff isn't really his thing. Everyone is different.
Max Eberl, September 2026
He's quite quiet, but he's also very willing to help you, like on the pitch when he'll give you some instructions to help you to defend or to make the move for the pass he wants to play. He's very sharp with those things. You don't always see it on the pitch, but he's very aware of it. It's the same in training as well, where he always tries to improve. He stays behind after training to practise his shooting. He's got an incredible shot. I think it's those details that make him different. His focus is on himself. He also wants to be one of the best. He's humble, a good guy. He laughs and jokes like everyone. But for me, that's his personality and it's fine like that.
Luis Díaz, September 2026
I think he's fine the way he is, because why does he have to talk if he doesn't want to? Just because we want him to, so that he makes headlines? He doesn't want that; it's just not his nature. Someone like me stands in front of the camera and talks, whereas Olise would rather go somewhere after the game where he feels comfortable. His comfort zone is probably not the microphone or the camera, but rather the people around him. And I don't see any problem with that at all. As long as he plays football the way he does, then he can wear whatever he wants and walk past any microphone he likes, because for me, what he does on the pitch is far more entertaining than any interviews.
Lothar Matthäus, September 2026
He’s exceptional in his position. […] I'd rather a player giving his best in his actual job, on the pitch [like Michael Olise], than in interviews. From my point of view, some media outlets have turned that into a campaign. As far as I know, there aren't any contractual obligations that require him to give extensive interviews.
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, September 2026
[Olise has] the whole package; not just how he plays football, but also who he is as a person.
Vincent Kompany, September 2026
He's a really good character. I know that not everyone gets to see his true personality. Everyone has their own way of playing football and behaving off the pitch.
Harry Kane, September 2026
Michael Olise is pure talent. He's a player, and I love players. He wants to entertain, and it's not just that. He has a feel for football. He knows when to go for it and when to hold back. I'm happy to be by his side.
Zinadine Zidane, September 2026
October–
Michael Olise is different on and off the pitch. He's an exceptional guy! He's exemplary in every way. What he does without the ball is unbelievable. He's the one who runs the most, who wins back the most balls. [...] He always puts the team first; he's a special player. I had absolutely no doubt about his future, zero. He's the kind of guy who makes you fall in love with football again.
Thierry Henry, October 2026
He's a bit reserved and shy off the pitch, but that's fine because on the pitch he's not shy at all - he's a natural leader with his game. He's showing all his talent with the ball.
Zinadine Zidane, October 2026
Other athletes
He's one of my favorite players. I got to see him play live for the first time, which was really cool.
Tennis player Ben Shelton, April 2025
[On his favorite athlete] Michael Olise, soccer player.
Basketball player AJ Dybantsa, July 2026
He is the best player in the world right now!
Boris Becker, October 2026
Media personalities
Football is not dead. Michael Olise exists.
Grégoire Margotton, TF1, April 2026
He's the greatest talent in French football since Zidane. He has that same elegance.
Bruno Constant, RTL, June 2026
I've known Michael ever since he played at Crystal Palace - and I even did his first post-match TV interview! (Yes, he didn't say too much back then either!) But for what it's worth, he genuinely is an introvert and he's shy off the pitch. He is, however, very funny and super polite.
Vaishali Bhardwaj, September 2026
I wouldn't say that I got him to open up. Only Michael can explain why he felt comfortable talking to me at that particular moment. I think the fact that we had met before helped make the interaction feel more natural. I was told that he doesn't do that to create a certain image for himself. Rather, he is naturally a quiet, reserved and shy person. When he is surrounded by people he knows, he can naturally show more of himself.

2022
From the first training session, you could see he was on a completely different stratosphere to the rest of the kids. Touch, movement, everything. He just glided across the pitch. Even at a full sprint. He would get around the pitch quicker than everyone else and always be in the right place at the right time. Even back then, he was a special player.
Michael Richards, Olise's Under-7 coach at his youth team Hayes & Yeading United, March 2022
Since making his way into first-team football, it's been a really maturing experience for him. He's always been a very polite boy. And he is very humble. I think he's found the balance now, of carrying that ability and that confidence while also understanding that you still have to work hard and be dedicated to your training and your profession.
Sean Conlon, former Chelsea Youth scout who recommended Olise to Chelsea Academy, March 2022
His exit was mutual and what was best for Michael. He's fulfilling his potential, so it has all worked out. He's got such an amazing family around him. His agent did a fantastic job with him, giving him the guidance, and Reading did, too. It is hard with such an elite talent, to make sure the player knows he has to work every day in training. Michael really appreciates his journey. He's such a mature and humble person, but that has been helped by his path. [...] He can go to the very, very top. Everybody at Chelsea is so pleased with his success.

Michael spent a lot of time practising his movements in situations that he might encounter in a match. He's a very hard worker, even when things are difficult, and he always wants to be the best he can be, which is the mark of great players. During every training exercise, he wants to win everything. In a group, that's what players like in a teammate. As a coach, you can rely on players like Michael, who has temperament and ambition, while ensuring that this is beneficial to the player and the group. He's a very intelligent person, and the relevance of his interventions is remarkable. They're not frequent, but when he intervenes it's for a precise and necessary situation. He quickly understands the context and the possibilities ahead.

It horrifies me when people say he's nonchalant or arrogant; he's just very shy. For example, he never raised his hand in class because he never wanted to draw attention to himself. He would keep his head down, do what he had to do, and then head straight to the pitch. Football was everything to him; it was his whole world. He was a good student, especially in maths and sciences, less so in writing, but when his team didn't win at recess or something had happened, it was very difficult for him to concentrate again because he wanted to go out and make things right. He was already a big perfectionist who could get frustrated, a future champion. But he wanted to stay in the background. When the other kids went to get their medals, he stayed on the sidelines. When you congratulated him on a goal, he would put his finger to his mouth and run back to his position, looking at the ground.
