Translation: In the city on the Neva (Saint Petersburg), I was surrounded by love and care. The experienced teachers, [that is,] the mentors of the great Ulanova, generously shared their knowledge with me and with other young envoys from Kirghizia (now Kyrgyzstan). They took our failures and disappointments to heart and rejoiced in our first successes.

Translation: We were like wild stones. We didn't know a single Russian word. All we felt was that we were loved here, that people wanted to teach us something good. What exactly? We didn't know. We simply believed that it was the right thing to do. And to this day, it remains a mystery to me how we were taught — first to understand Russian speech, then the French terminology of ballet, while at the same time mastering the intricacies of mathematics and physics, and entering the fascinating world of literature, history, and geography... All of this still seems like a miracle to me.

Translation: It is difficult to name a performer who could have so easily spoken the language of dancing, she, like a morning star, sparkled in the "Cholpon" (Morning Star) ballet by [Mikhail] Rauchwerger.

Translation: In 1951, I bought a ticket for the front row to see the ballet "Raymonda". What an experience that was! That dance completely turned my consciousness upside down with its beauty. And the ballerina performing it, I thought, she can't be a living person, but a statuette sculpted by an artist! That was the first time I saw Bübüsara Beyshenalieva... Filled with admiration, I returned to Orenburg and told everyone about her for a long time. Thus began my first encounter with this great artist.

Translation: Now I can say with confidence... Kirghiz (Kyrgyz) folk music, with its richness of modes, emotional depth, great variety of rhythmic patterns, and extraordinary lyrical warmth, has had a profoundly beneficial effect on my work and has significantly influenced my entire creative path.

Translation: She once confessed to me that Chinghiz Aitmatov had proposed to her, but she refused him. I didn't ask her why, although I could see that there was a deep feeling between them. That was their personal life. On the day of my mother's funeral, at the memorial service, Chinghiz Torekulovich said: "What bound us was the warmth of our hearts." Was that an open declaration of love, or simply a tribute to the great ballerina who had given new life to the images of his heroines? I don't know.
