Hanham variation C41 Philidor defence → Hanham variation → 6. Nxe5
6...dxe5
Black recaptures on e5.
There are two tactical features that stand out for White in this position: the queens see each other, and White's bishop is threatening Bxf7+. It might seem that these moves could be played in either order to win a pawn, however 7. Qxd8+? Kxd8 8. Bxf7 allows Black to play 8...Nxe4 and recover the material.
The better order is 7. Bxf7+ Ke7 8. Qxd8+ Kxd8 and White is in time to play 9. Nc3 or 9. f3 to defend e4.
Despite appearances, 7. Bxf7+ Kxf7 is not a mistake due to deflection, as after 8. Qxd8 Black has 8...Bb4+ discovering an attack on d8 and guaranteeing they recover the queen.
