Latvian Gambit: Mayet Attack
Black ignores the threat of Nf7 and instead counterattacks White's g2 pawn and e5 knight. 5. Nf7?! seems to win material; it forks the queen on g5 and the rook on h8, but leads to complications after 5...Qxg2! 6. Rf1 d5! where Black is starting an attack and White has to be careful not to be checkmated early.
5. d4! is the true test of Qg5. It gives up a pawn on g2, but when 5...Qxg2, named the Poisoned Pawn Variation, chaos will ensue after 6. Qh5+! g6 7. Bf7+!, where White may want to sacrifice material (probably a rook on h1 and a bishop on c1!) for an attack.
