Eingorn variation Winawer variation C18
7...Kf8 · Eingorn variation
Black moves the king to defend the weakness on g7.
When this variation started rising in popularity in the eighties, players with White used to play 8. Nf3, after which Black can put more pressure on White's queenside with 8...Qa5 9. Bd2 Qa4 10. Ra2, after which Black has an easier time trading off the light-squared bishops, since White's usual response a4 for trading the bishops on White's terms is no longer available.
Nowadays, moves like 8. a4 and 8. Bd2 are more popular, which dissuade Black's plan of trading the bishops. 8. a4 does this by occupying the a4 square in advance, and 8. Bd2 does this by rendering 8...Qa5 ineffective, since it no longer comes with tempo on the c3-pawn, allowing 9. a4 +.
Another popular response is 8. h4, preparing an attack on Black's kingside and allowing for the rook on h1 to be brought into the attack faster through Rh3.
History
The variation is named after Vereslav Eingorn who started using it in 1983, employing it many times in the following years.chessgames position search https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chess.pl?page=1&pid=18056 www.chessgames.com
