Center Attack Giuoco Piano 7. Kf1!? · Cracow Variation This is a weird-looking move that seemingly doesn't make any sense. White can no longer castle and the e4 pawn is undefended. But the compensation exists. White has got a massive center while Black has none, and White are more prepared to attack than Black. The Cracow Variation a tricky opening, Black has to find the only moves to not to get a bad position. Black has several options: 7...Nxe4. Black has grabbed an actually free pawn. White can strike in the center with 8. d5!, kicking the knight back. After 8...Ne7 White has 9. Qd4, grabbing even more space, or a tricky 9. Bb3 with a threat of 10. Qd4 which is somewhy often unseen. 7...d5!. This is the strongest for Black option. After 8. exd5 Nxd5 9. Nc3 Black has to be careful to not to take the knight with their own knight. There is no reason to trade off a central knight. None. Instead, they should take the knight with the bishop, like in the Greco Gambit. 7...O-O?. After 8. d5! Black has giant problems with space and activity. In case of 8...Ne7 or 8...Nb8 White will go 9. e5!, completely paralysing Black, in case of 8. Na5 there is 9. Bd3 with an unstoppable 10. a3 and 11. b4. 7...d6??. This is a blunder. After 8. d5! Ne7 or 8...Na5 there is 9. Qa4+, winning the bishop on b4. Theory table References See also Giuoco Piano
