2...d6 — Autenaś Defense
2...d6 supports a future ...e5 advance and gives Black a flexible setup while avoiding an immediate commitment to ...d5.
3. e4 establishes a broad center and gives White more space.
3. Nc3 develops naturally and reinforces White's control of the center.
Downsides: The main drawback of 2...d6 is that Black spends a tempo preparing ...e5 instead of immediately contesting the center. White can use this time to establish a strong pawn center and complete development.
An independent line is 1. d4 c6 2. Bf4 d6 3. e4 Nf6 4. Nc3 Qb6.
