Winawer variation Poisoned pawn variation
8. Bd3 · Poisoned pawn declined
White does not go for the craziness that arises from accepting the poisoned pawn but develops the kingside instead.
While White has a much easier time castling kingside, this may not be beneficial, especially when Black's kingside is opened up or far-advanced like in Carlsen - Rapport, 2024.https://lichess.org/fUvSXVK4#15 lichess.org Carlsen - Rapport, 2024
Black's main responses involve trying to force White's pieces onto "bad" squares.
8...c4 questions the bishop's placement immediately, forcing it back to e2 (9. Bf1 would be a waste of time). After this, Black has two options:
9...Qa5 puts more pressure on the queenside and forces White's dark-squared bishop to d2. This queen move is very thematic for the Winawer and is the central point of the Portisch Hook variation. Maneuvers for both sides can be observed in Shankland - Mishra, 2023.https://lichess.org/YlNUqgjm#18 lichess.org Shankland - Mishra, 2023
Black can also go for the immediate 9...Nf5, waiting to see what White does and potentially transposing back to 9...Qa5 lines. In both lines, Black will be able to keep their kingside intact thanks to the knight jumping to f5 to defend the g-pawn.
8...cxd4 is more aggressive, often leading to more poisoned-pawn-esque positions. Black leaves White's bishop on d3 and allows White to eventually take on g7 because this pawn can no longer be defended with Nf5. 8...cxd4 requires White to respond with 9. Ne2. Theory continues 9...dxc3 10. Qxg7 Rg8 11. Qxh7 Qxe5 unclear with a very double edged position: White's king is stuck in the centre, but White has good prospects in an endgame thanks to the outside passed h-pawn.
8...Qa5 simply transposes into the 8...c4 lines after 9. Bd2 c4 10. Be2.
