Slav defence Wiesbaden variation D17 Wiesbaden variation 7. f3 White doesn't capture the c4-pawn. Instead, they prepare 8. e4, which comes with tempo on Black's bishop. With the support of the f-pawn, Black can't stop e4 from being played, so they must find an advantage by different means. /7...Bb4/ is the main line. This move removes the knight's defence from e4 and has the idea of sacrificing the light-squared bishop on e4 in exchange for three pawns. 7...c5 tries to disrupt White's centre. After 8. e4 both 8...cxd4 and 8...Bg6 have been tried, but results have generally been favourable for White. This variation was also played in games 3, 5 and 8 of the 2010 World Chess Championship. Modern engines prefer the move 7...Bg6, but this is rarely played and usually transposes after 8. e4 c5. Theory table 7. ... Bb4 8. e4 Bxe4 9. fxe4 Nxe4 10. Bd2 Qxd4 11. Nxe4 Qxe4+ 12. Qe2 Bxd2+ 13.
