1... c5
White reaches a more competitive Sicilian defence position, the McDonnell attack. Its an offbeat Move, resembles a Dutch Defence or Anglo-Dutch Defence.
2. Nf3 develops naturally..
2. e3 supports the center.
2. d3 supports e4 and gives White a solid setup.
2. c4 can create a more aggressive central structure and fight for control of d5.
The main drawback of 1...c5 is that Black does not immediately challenge White's f4-pawn. White can use the extra time to build a strong center with e4. The c-pawn also moves away from c7, leaving the d5-square more important.
An independent line is 1. f4 c5 2. Nf3
