Dimension
(a.k.a. Axis, Aspect, Facet)
XBRL Open Information Model definition of dimension
Normative
A dimension is a type of report element. A dimension describes a fact (a dimension is a property of a fact). A dimension or distinguishing aspect provides information necessary to describe a fact or distinguish one fact from another fact within a report. A fact may have only the three core aspects (entity, period, concept) and zero to many additional noncore distinguishing aspects defined within a report model.
Commentary and Interpretations
For example, if a reporting economic entity had three segments and it wanted to report revenues for each segment, a dimension such as "Segments" might be created and separate members for each of the three reporting segments and another member for the total value of the aggregation of all segments would also be provided.
