Caro-Kann Exchange Variation Caro-Kann
Caro-Kann Exchange Variation
Black prevents the white bishop from moving to f4, and contests the vital e5 square. If white neglects to contest this, a later e5 by Black can be very strong.
White here can stop the black bishop from developing to g4 with 6. h3.
6. Nf3 is commonly played, but needlessly allows the white bishop to develop to g4.
