Sicilian Defense: Najdorf Variation, Freak Attack The Freak Attack is a very recent and upcoming response to the Najdorf. White's idea is to prepare a quick g2-g4, in style of the Keres Attack, combined with h4 and f4 causing problems to black's kingside. It also allows the bishop to develop to h3 in the future. Even though Rg1 looks absurd at first glance, it is a totally sound option according to the strongest engines. It is also a great surprise weapon - Theory is still developing on it and engine lines are still not sure how to proceed. Of course, like every move, it is not the best choice either. White has forfeited kingside castling, so black can concentrate on the center and the queenside instead. White also leaves a massive hole on f3 -- While covered for now by the knight and the queen, black can later make use of the backward f2 pawn. And finally, black can prevent white's apparent plan with an immediate h5, which also has a massive winrate so far. The antidote to the entire variation is considered to be ...e5 Nb3 Be6 g4 d5!. Black strikes back in the center and a series of trades occur leaving both sides with a minimal amount of pieces to proceed into the game, and white's kingside assault plan is halted before it even starts.
