4. Nc3
White attacks Black's e4 pawn with their knight, the most commonly played move.
4...Nf6 is the most common reply, defending the pawn with their knight. White can then choose between the normal 5. Bc4, developing their bishop, or 5. Qe2?!, setting up a trap if Black plays 5...Qd4??.
4...Qd4?! defends the pawn with the queen. This may transpose into the 4...Nf6 5. Qe2?! trap if after 5. Qe2?! 5...Nf6?? is played, or can go into another trap that can happen after 5. d3 exd3? 6. Bxd3, where if 6...Bxd3?? is played, 7. Qf3! and Black cannot defend both f7 and b7 at the same time.
4...Nc6 gives the pawn back peacefully and develops the knight.
