Morozevich variation D17 Carlsbad variation
11...g5 · Morozevich variation
11...g5 is the most popular line nowadays and is considered the best move for Black. Because the kingside pawn structure is significantly weakened, Black will usually resort to castling queenside.
12. Bxg5?? would blunder 12...Nxc4. The bishop can't stay on the same diagonal as the black queen, so some pieces have to be traded.
12. Bxe5 allows Black to secure the bishop pair after 12...Nxe5 but White gets compensation after 13. Qd4 f6 14. O-O-O preventing Black from castling queenside.
12. Ne3 is played most often, planning to take the light-squared bishop. After 12...gxf4 13. Nxf5 O-O-O 14. Qc2 Black has two isolated pawns on the kingside, but a four on two majority on the queenside and has control of the d-file. White should soon castle short.
History
The Morozevich is named after the player Alexander Morozevich, who was the first person to play the variation and did so against Garry Kasparov in the year 2000https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1005706.
