Egypt
Egypt was one of the earliest countries to use a postage meter. For a short period in 1922 a Moss (New Zealand) machine was used by the National Bank of Egypt in Cairo. Postage meters were not used again until 1933.
All stamps are inscribed “EGYPT”, “EGYPTE”, “ARE”, “RAE”, “RAU”, “UAR”, or have Arabic script without Western inscription. Few stamps have a meter number (M#) but many have a Licence number (L#), in Arabic.
Although manufactured in Germany, the Nessim machine (Type PV1) was invented and used only in Egypt.
The stamps are grouped according to political period and inscription.
A - Kingdom of Egypt, 1922 – 1953
B - Republic of Egypt, 1953 – 1958
C - United Arab Republic, 1958 – 1971
D - Arab Republic of Egypt, 1971 – present
Many Egyptian meter stamps have doubled value figures, with Arabic over Western numerals (technically Eastern Arabic over Western Arabic). This catalog represents the Arabic zero as “12px“.
GROUP A: Kingdom of Egypt, 1922–1952
All franks, except Type A1, have a crown and Arabic toughra (monogram) in the design. Two toughras exist, one for King Fuad (1917-1936) and one for King Farouk (1936-1952) as follows:
left|550px
315px|leftA1. Moss Model “D” (FV-5), 27 February 1922.
One machine only with different frank design for each denomination:
A. 2 mills (square) 4 [$300]
B. 4 mills (tombstone) 4 [One cover known, value undetermined]
C. 5 mills (indented curves) 4 [$150]
D. 10 mills (squared circle) 4 [$150]
E. 50 mills (triangles) 4 [Extremely rare, only 3 examples known, value undetermined]
Separate panel at bottom contains the denomination spelled out.
Meter number “2” in centre circle of each value.
Printed in red-pink.
In use only one month, 27 February to 31 March 1922.
TM: nil
NOTE: Proofs of these stamps exist and are worth approximately $150. Proofs of the 2, 4 and 50 mill stamps are far more common than postally used examples and worth less than the stated values. Proofs of the 5 and 10 mill stamps are somewhat scarcer than postally used examples.

By the beginning of the Arab Republic of Egypt period, Pitney Bowes had become the owner of Universal Postal Frankers. Stamps from the “Multi Value” and “Automax” models became virtually indistinguishable. Types DA3.1 through DA3.6 could be from either the “Automax” or the “Multi Value” machines. All have a 5-pointed asterisk in the value figures, and all have double-circle town marks.
