Start with a rim that is round and true
make sure you have the correct number of holes the same on the flange of the hub and the rim
make sure you have the correct spoke length, you can use a spoke length calculator as found on ebikes.ca or in the case of a pedego bike look up the correct spoke length in the pedego price list.
Find the valve stem on the rim.
Start on the right side with correct spoke length,
Les:
Key spoke first spoke, place the first spoke to the right of the valve hole with the head facing out. Follow spokes around second hole if their is two lines of holes or every fourth hole if their is one line of hole
Place the b spoke on the next hole to the right on the opposite side with heads out continue around
Place the c spoke with head on inward side on first side of flange establishing cross pattern, continue around placing in every second hole if their is two lines of holes or every fourth hole if theirs is one line of hole
Place the d spoke with with head on inward side establishing cross pattern on other side, continue around placing in every second hole if their is two lines of holes or every fourth hole if theirs is one line of hole
Clayton: as you put on nipples just cover the threads, then tension afterwards
Wheel should be relatively true. If wheel is not true must radially and laterally true.
Start with lateral true. Use calipers on trueing stand to adjust left and right.
Radial true. Bumps should be fixed by tightening spokes. (To bring closer to hub) dips should be improved by loosening spokes.
When reasonably true check dishing. Place in wheel and check centred in frame and chain not contacting wheel.
Check wheel dish is it centred in the rear triangle. Pull to the left by tightening left hand spokes or loosening right, pull to the right by tightening right hand spokes or loosening the left. Make sure chain is not rubbing against tire in low gear.
Radial true, set caliper below wheel
Bumps (farther from hub) should be removed by tightening spokes, low spots should be removed by loosening spokes
Les: It is important to due radial true of the entire wheel simultatneously as small adjustments propogate throughout the wheel
bring up tension uniformly by tightening all spokes by a quarter turn completely around the wheel
tension balance by tightening lower tensions spokes and loosening nearby spokes on the same side or tightening spokes on opposite side, loosen high tensions spokes and loosen on opposite side or tension nearby spoke on same side.
