4. Nf3 declines the exchange and retreats the knight to safety, keeping the position solid while maintaining the extra pawn.

4...f5 black gambits the pawn. 5. exf5 (Rayford Gambit Declined - Mikeś Gambit).
Downsides: White gives up some of the knight's activity by retreating to f3, while Black gains time to develop and put pressure on the extra pawn.
