Subfamily Huperzioideae
The Huperzioideae, known as firmosses, have also been treated as a separate family Huperziaceae. Firmosses differ from other Lycopodiaceae in that they grow in clumps, instead of producing creeping, horizontal stems like other family members."Family: Huperziaceae - firmoss family" Go Botany 3.5, Native Plant Trust, 2021 Of the three genera in this group, Huperzia is a temperate and arctic genus and is the only one found naturally in New York. Of the other two genera, Phlegmariurus is native to tropical and subtropical regions, and Phylloglossum is native to Australia and New Zealand.
Huperzia
Shining firmoss.jpg Huperzia lucidula, shining firmoss Commonly known as firmoss or fir-clubmoss, Huperzia (hoo-per-zee-uh) was named for Johann Peter Huperz, an early 19th century German botanist who specialized in ferns.
The rare Appalachian firmoss was published as Huperzia appalachiana in 1992, but authorities, including Weakly (2023)Weakley, A.S., and Southeastern Flora Team. 2023. Flora of the southeastern United States. University of North Carolina Herbarium, North Carolina Botanical Garden, Chapel Hill, U.S.A. Dec 23, 2023. consider it to be indistinct from the previously published Huperzia appressa.
