Lovely, albeit brief, bio of Ames in 1925
MAN OF MOMENT. Mr. Clement E. Ames One of South Australia's first experimenters in wireless and a keen observer in all matters pertaining to radio is Mr. Clement E. Ames, secretary of the South Australian division of the Wireless Institute, who has been selected to represent this State at the annual radio convention to be held in Perth in August. Mr. Ames first became interested in wireless about 15 years ago when he used a coherer set which was the type first used by Marconi. The coherer set was fairly sensitive, but under certain conditions it became useless, and was (Start Photo Caption) MR. CLEMENT E. Mr. Ames took out an experimental license in 1912, and since then, excluding the war period, has been experimenting in radio. After the war he constructed a single-valve set, which brought good results, and was issued the first transmitting license in the State. For two years he used a spark transmitter, operating under the call sign of S519. During this period Mr. Ames experimented with telephony, using his receiver as a transmitter, but only a short distance was obtained as a soft valve was used in the set. Prior to the war Mr. Ames was a local member of the Wireless Institute in New South Wales and after the war was instrumental in forming a division in this State. He was responsible for most of the initial work in connection with the establishment of a division in this State.http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article129731542 MAN OF MOMENT News IV, 578 South Australia 1 June 1925 2 April 2025 11 (HOME EDITION) National Library of Australia
