Caro-Kann Exchange Variation Caro-Kann
Caro-Kann Exchange Variation
This move defends the d4-pawn, while still prohibiting the development of black's light squared bishop to either f5 or g4.
White's light-squared bishop is well-developed on f4, and can be placed there after the most common response, 5...Nf6. For this reason, 5...Qc7, preventing 6. Bf4, is also commonly played.
