2. Nc3 — Miloś Defence
After 1. d4 d6 White responds with 2. Nc3, developing the knight and increasing control over the central squares.
2...e5 is the main idea of the Miloṡ Defence. Black immediately challenges White's d4-pawn and tries to establish a strong central presence.
2...c5!? — Antonio-Miloṡ Gambit challenges White's d4-pawn with an early pawn break, but it delays the development of Black's kingside pieces and can allow White to strengthen the center.
Downsides: The main drawback of 1...d6 is that Black initially gives White more control of the center. After 2.Nc3, White can play e4 and establish a large pawn center. Black must then challenge that center accurately, usually with ...e5, ...Nf6, or ...g6.
An independent line is 1. d4 d6 2. Nc3 e5 3. e4 Nf6 4. Nf3, when White establishes a strong center and Black develops actively against it.
The Miloṡ Defense is characterized by 1. d4 d6 2. Nc3, with Black using the flexible ...d6 setup and preparing to challenge White's center with ...e5.
