Austria
Most meter stamps of the country are inscribed “ÖSTERREICH”. Meters used during the German occupation from 1938 to 1945 had franks indistinguishable from those of Germany and can be identified only by an Austrian town name. After World War 2 several of the German style meters were defaced or altered to remove the Nazi identity, and these, also, can be identified as Austrian only by the town name. Some Post Due stamp types do not contain the country name. These can be identified by the inscription “NACHGEBÜHR” (postage due).
The first postage meter was placed into use in 1922. It was a machine locally manufactured by Mr. Max Baum. The Baum machine was not able to adjust to the rapid inflation of 1922–23 and was in use for only a short time only.
The stamps are grouped according to appearance and by usage:
A – Small experimental franks without TM
B – Pre-WW2 design, horizontal rectangle with points at the sides
C – German occupation
D – Post war provisional stamps
E – Rectangle with double straight-line frame, inscribed “ÖSTERREICH” at top
F – Rectangle with single straight-line frame
G – Open design without outer frame
H – Rectangle with double straight-line frame, inscribed “ÖSTERREICH” above “EUROCENT”
I – Open design without outer frame, inscribed “ÖSTERREICH” above “EUROCENT”
J – Open design without outer frame. With digital data matrix (2d barcode) as part of the stamp
PO – Special stamps for Post Office window service
PD – Special stamps for Postage Due
PE – Special stamps for Bulk Mail
PV – Digital stamps from self-service vending machines
NOTE: Spacing for Francotyp stamps are measured from the center of the date figures to the center of the value figures. Spacing for all other stamps are measured from the right edge of the town mark to the left edge of the frank.
NOTE: For specialized information about the meter stamps of Austria, see Katalog der osterreichischen Post- und Absenderfreistempel, by Otto Gleixner, 1990, self-published, Emmering, Germany.

b. Printed in blue: 4 45 groschen (M# 104) 2 [Extremely rare. Value uncertain]
NOTES:
The Groschen replaced the Krone (Kronen) in 1925 due to inflation. One hundred Kronen became one Groschen.
Meter number 101 was used by the company Heinrich Franck and Sons of Linz. Meters 102 through 105 appear to have been used by various government agencies into 1926. Meter 105 was later used to apply Postage Due charges to court documents for which the recipient was required to pay the postage. (See variety a.)
Variety b is known by a single example, a cut-out affixed to a blank post card, and is probably a favor proof or an actual proof. It may not have been used on actual mail, or it may represent another Franco meter diverted for court use.
