4...Nf6 · Caro-Kann Tartakower Variation
Nf6 is played at all levels, but is slightly more common in amateur play, and offers a trade of knights.
This move challenges white's strong e4-knight but allows white to double black's pawns with the main move, 5. Nxf6+.
Other moves also exist. /5. Qd3/ defends the knight and sets up a trap, 5...Bf5?? 6. Nxf6+! exf6 7. Qxf5!.
/5. Bd3/ is the Alekhine Gambit. White gives up their d-pawn in exchange for development after 5...Qxd4 6. Nf3.
Some players have also tried /5. Ng5/, with the intention of entering the Alien Gambit, a dubious but scary knight sacrifice on f7, first played by Witty Alien, a streamer from Bulgaria.
/5. Ng3/ is not really a bad move, but allows Black to begin creating threats themselves with the move 5...h5.
