8. d4? · Rosen attack
White counts the number of pieces attacking d4, and the number of pieces defending it, and reckons that 8. d4 is a safe move.
However, 8...Nxd4 9. Nxd4 exd4 10. Qxd4?? and Black has 10...c5!. Wherever White's queen moves, Black follows up with 11...c4 and the bishop is trapped. This motif is called the Noah's Ark trap, because that's how old it is.
10. c3, treating the attack as a gambit, is occasionally played but White has insufficient compensation.
History
Leon Rosen tried this line against Mikhail Chigorin in Paris in 1900. Chigorin did not play the best move, 8...Nxd4. He continued 8...Bg5, pinning the knight and allowing White to secure the pawn with 9. c3.Rosen v Chigorin, 1900. Chessgames.com
