FYLSE or First Year Law Student Exam (colloquially known as the "Baby Bar" exam) is a regulatory exam for non ABA law school students.
This Guide uses real past exam questions to help students practice and understand commonly tested issues. Model answers and score sheets are provided as learning tools and for self-assessment.
Practice is essential—not just memorizing the law, but applying it under exam conditions and learning from feedback.
Outlining before writing is critical. A clear, organized outline helps structure answers, manage time, and ensure all issues are addressed.
A passing answer focuses on applying law to facts, not just stating rules or conclusions. Strong answers explain reasoning, use facts effectively, distinguish arguments, and rely on clear logic.
Issue prioritization matters: address both major and minor issues, but allocate time based on their importance.
Time management is crucial: typically divide one hour per essay (e.g., 10 minutes reading, 10 outlining, 40 writing), stick to limits, and avoid spending too long on any one issue.
