Schlechter variation Slav defence D15
4...g6 · Schlechter variation
Black intends to fianchetto the dark-squared bishop.
White has the option of transposing into an exchange variation with /5. cxd5/. This is quite a popular way to meet the Schlechter at the master level, since 4...g6 isn't a very useful move for Black in the exchange variation.
Apart from that, White can try to develop the dark-squared bishop outside of the pawn-chain with /5. Bf4/ or /5. Bg5/. More popular, however, is /5. e3/, preparing to develop the light-squared bishop and defending c4.
