Using Ubuntu Linux/Master List of Ubuntu Releases

thumb|150px|Ubuntu 16.04 List of Ubuntu releases Ubuntu releases new versions every six months, and always supports them for at least 18 months with daily security fixes and patches to critical bugs. Some releases are designated as Long Term Support (LTS) versions, which have three years support for the desktop and five years for the server editions. It is intended that new LTS versions will be released every two years. The most recent standard version, Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf), was released on October 22, 2015. The most recent LTS version, Ubuntu 16.04 (Wily Werewolf), was released on April 21, 2016 The next version of Ubuntu, Ubuntu 16.10, will be called Yakkety Yak. Each finished release has both a code name and a version number. The version number is based on the year and month of release. For example, the very first "stable" release of Ubuntu (as opposed to development versions), Ubuntu 4.10, was released on October 20, 2004.https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-announce/2004-October/000003.html Ubuntu 4.10 announcement 2004-10-20 2007-09-25 ubuntu-announce Shuttleworth Mark Mark Shuttleworth Releases are timed to be approximately one month after GNOME releases, which are in turn about one month after releases of X.org. Consequently, every Ubuntu release comes with a newer version of both GNOME and X. The initial download and installation of Ubuntu is of course free of charge. In addition to the free updates, and support from the ubuntu community, and this guide, there are a number of other books about Ubuntu Linux, and paid technical support is available from Canonical Ltd.https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-announce/2006-April/000065.html Announcing Beta release of Ubuntu 6.06 LTS 2006-04-26 Version Code name Testing name Release date Supported until Features and Changes4.10Warty WarthogSounder2004-10-20http://lwn.net/Articles/107267/ Ubuntu 4.10 announcement 2007-04-132006-04-30https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-announce/2006-March/000061.html Ubuntu 4.10 reaches end of life on 30 April 2006 2006-03-28 2007-09-25 ubuntu-announce Zimmerman Matt ShipIt5.04Hoary HedgehogArray2005-04-08http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/504 5.04 Release Notes 2005-04-08 2007-04-142006-10-31https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-security-announce/2006-October/000418.html Ubuntu 5.04 reaches end-of-life on 31 October 2006 2006-10-23 2007-09-25 ubuntu-security-announce Armstrong Christina Update Manager; Upgrade Notifier; readahead; grepmap; laptop suspend, hibernate and standby; dynamic frequency scaling; Ubuntu hardware database; Kickstart; installation from USB devices; UTF-8 by default; APT authentication5.10Breezy BadgerColony2005-10-13https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-announce/2005-October/000038.html Ubuntu 5.10 announcement 2006-10-11http://www.ubuntu.com/download/releasenotes/510 Ubuntu 5.10 release notes 2006-12-212007-04-13https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-security-announce/2007-March/000504.html Ubuntu 5.10 reaches end-of-life on April 13th 2007 2007-03-14 2007-09-25 ubuntu-security-announce Heen Tollef Fog Usplash (graphical boot sequence); "Add/Remove..." application tool; language selector; logical volume management support; Hewlett-Packard printer support; OEM installer support; Launchpad integration6.06 LTSDapper DrakeFlight2006-06-01http://www.ubuntu.com/news/606released Ubuntu 6.06 LTS announcement 2006-12-21http://www.ubuntu.com/download/releasenotes/606 Ubuntu 6.06 LTS release notes 2006-12-212009-06 (desktops)Long Term Support (LTS) release.
