Mieses Opening: Reversed Rat
1...e5
With 1...e5, named the Reversed RatMieses Opening: Reversed Rat https://lichess.org/opening/Mieses_Opening_Reversed_Rat/d3_e5 2026-04-14 lichess.org en-US, Black takes the center as White didn't so it themselves with their timid starting move. The Mieses Opening is usually flexible for White as they haven't made a big commitment yet.
Responses
The most common amateur move, 2. e4, transposes to the Leonardis Variation of the King's Pawn OpeningKing's Pawn Game: Leonardis Variation https://lichess.org/opening/Kings_Pawn_Game_Leonardis_Variation/d3_e5_e4 2026-04-14 lichess.org en-US. Although it controls the center, it doesn't fully help White's development as their f1 bishop is blocked by the pawn on d3.
2. c4, Stockfish's most preferred move, transposes to a line more commonly seen in the English Opening (1. c4 e5 2. d3). It controls a central square, d5, and helps the b1 white knight to develop to c3 without blocking the c-pawn which would usually be on c2.
2. Nf3 is a good move, attacking the pawn on e5 while developing the knight on g1. Black cannot kick the knight away with 2...e4 as the pawn on d3 controls e4.
2. g3 has the simple idea of fianchettoing the kingside bishop to g2, as on the f1-a6 diagonal, the pawn on d3 blocks it from reaching anywhere past e2.
2. Nd2, the Valencia OpeningValencia Opening https://lichess.org/opening/Valencia_Opening/d3_e5_Nd2 2026-04-14 lichess.org en-US, is a less orthodox response to 1...e5 as it blocks in the queenside bishop and cramps White's development a bit. However, it is fully playable as it develops the knight towards the center and the c1 bishop still has options of fianchettoing to b2 after the b-pawn moves to b3.
2. d4!? reaches a position which is identical to the Scandinavian Defence, but with colours reversed. Any position that can be reached from the normal Scandinavian can be reached from 2. d4!?, just with colours flipped.
