Basic Info and Rules: Table tennis (also referred to as ping-pong) is an indoor paddle sport commonly found in recreational centers or in games rooms of houses. Table tennis is similar to tennis but on a table as the name suggests. It played by using a table with a net, a set of table tennis paddles, and a ball. 2 or 4 players can play at a time. All players will split up into two teams, each on one of the short sides of the table. Players use their paddle to hit the ball across the table. Each match consists of 5 games. To win a game, you have to get to 11 points and a two margin. If it is a tie, like 10-11, the game will continue until a two point margin happens. To win a match, you have to win 3 or more games out of 5. How to Get Points: In order to get a point, you must hit the ball successfully across the table in a way where your opponent misses it. But there are other ways to gain points: Your opponent hitting the net, your opponent hitting the ball before it bounces once on their side, the ball hitting twice on their side, and your opponent hitting the ball but it doesn’t bounce once on your side. Dimensions of the Equipment: The tables come in all different variations and sizes but the ITTF regulation size is 9 feet (2.74 meters) long, 5 feet (1.525 meters) wide, and 2.5 feet (76 centimeters) tall. The paddles can vary in size and shape, but the ITTF does have regulations for the paddle’s painting, materials, and other components of it. The paddle must be painted red on the smooth side and be painted black on the rough side. The blade (the thin part behind each side of the paddle) must be covered by a layer of adhesive that is approved to be used for striking. The ball must have a diameter of 1.575 inches (40mm), weigh 0.0952 ounces (2.7g). History of Table Tennis: Table tennis is said to have been created by Upper-Class Victorians in England during the 1880’s as an after dinner game alternative to lawn tennis. They used almost anything they find: Books could been used as the paddles or net, the dining table might have been the playing table, and the balls could’ve been a cork or other bouncy objects. It became officially known as “table tennis” in the early 1920’s. Meetings were held in cities like London and Berlin which formed the ITTF (International Table Tennis Federation) on December 12th, 1926. The ITTF managed and created the official rules and equipment for table tennis when it formed. Then that same year from December 6th to December 11th, the world’s first World Table Tennis Championship happened. The host city was London, England and had athletes from 7 countries and drew in about under 1,000 spectators. Sadly it flopped but soon more athletes and fans came to the championships. The championship with the most countries was the 2025 Doha, Qatar World Table Tennis Championships which had 640 players representing 127 countries. In the Seoul 1988 Olympics, table tennis was added to the sports list. Many major countries in table tennis at the Olympics include China, Japan, South Korea, Germany, Sweden, Poland, France, and the United Kingdom. Due to people sharing their culture, online communities, and the many fans worldwide, table tennis is one of the most popular sports in the world!
