Chigorin variation C00 French defence → Chigorin variation
2...c5
The game takes on the appearance of a Sicilian defence. White cannot now play d4 because Black's c-pawn controls the square.
White's usual plan is to play 3. Nf3, with g3 and Bg2, in the manner of a closed Sicilian. Fianchettoing the kingside bishop avoids having to move the queen again to develop it
The move order 3. g3 is also fine. This reserves the option of f4 before Nf3.
