Brief bio for Smallacombe in 1925
MEN OF MOMENT. 5CL's ANNOUNCER. There are few persons in a position to send messages by wireless to members of their own family and to tell the bedtime story to their own children. Mr. William C. Smallacombe, however, is one of those. Every evening William, jun., Mary, and Betty listen to their dad's voice picked up from the air by his six-valve receiver telling them the fairy story and wishing them goodnight. Mr. Smallacombe is announcer for Central Broadcasters, Limited, holders of the Class A licence. His voice, familiar as it is to the 1,245 persons who hold receiving licences, is also familiar to the men in the street, for it was his voice eminently suitable for microphone work, which kept them informed of the progress of the recent test match. Mr. Smallacombe has shown commendable enterprise during his business career, especially in the recent years during which wireless has developed so rapidly. He was born in this State 34 years ago. His first position was in the warehouse of Matthew, Goode, & Co., Limited, where he (Start Photo Caption) Mr. W. C. Smallacombe (End Photo Caption) was engaged in accountancy work. Advertising attracted him, and he joined the Successful Advertising Company in Melbourne. While there his studies in the subject secured him a diploma. He then came to Adelaide to manage the Adelaide branch of the company's business. He relinquished that position to market an invention in New South Wales. Returning to Adelaide he resumed advertising and salesmanship. He has toured a large part of the Commonwealth by motor as a salesman. Seeing the possibilities of wireless Mr. Smallacombe joined the Millwood Auto and Radio Co., Limited, and then formed a company with the object of broadcasting and selling radio material. His present position is the outcome of that venture. Music is Mr. Smallacombe's hobby. He was secretary of the Adelaide Philharmonic Society when Mr. Roy Mellish was conductor.http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article129823012 MEN OF MOMENT News IV, 477 South Australia 2 February 1925 23 August 2025 9 (HOME EDITION) National Library of Australia
