Advance variation B12 Caro-Kann → Advance variation 3...Bf5
4. Nd2
4. Nd2 is an uncommon sideline in the Caro-Kann advance variation. This is a positional approach. Rather than develop the knight to c3, White plans to route it via d2 to b3, where it will control c5, and White retains the option of playing pawn to c3 or c4.
4...e6 5. Nb3 is the main continuation. On b3 the knight controls c5, so if 5...c5 6. dxc5 Bxc5 7. Nxc5 Qa5+ 8. c3 Qxc5 9. Be3 Qc7 10. f4, White gets the bishop pair and some space advantage. Instead, Black may postpone the pawn break and the line may continue 5...Nd7 6. Nf3 Ne7 7. Be2 Nc8 8. O-O Be7.
The manoeuvre Nd2 & Nb3 is not uncommon in the Caro-Kann. It is also seen in the Short variation, 4. Nf3, after 4...e6 5. Be2 Nd7 6. O-O Ne7 7. Nbd2 h6 8. Nb3.
