Apologizing
There are different ways of apologizing in Dutch. We have seen one in the short conversation above:
neemt u mij niet kwalijkneem me niet kwalijksorryexcuseerhet spijt me
Neemt u mij niet kwalijk and its less formal counterpart neem me niet kwalijk. Kwalijk means odious, noxious and the verbal expression kwalijk nemen is to take offense at something. There are other ways of saying the same thing:
Sorry
Pardon
Excuseer, excuseert u mij
In answer you can use het spijt me, lit. "it causes me regret" or also sorry.

Dutch has two verbs with the meaning to understand: begrijpen en verstaan. Verstaan refers to language, diction or noise interference, i.e. it is about hearing. Begrijpen is more to comprehend intellectually, "to make sense of something", i.e. more about thinking e.g.:
"Get lost?" Ik versta wat je zegt, maar ik begrijp niet waarom je het zegt -- "Get lost?" I understand what you are saying, but I don't understand why you are saying it.
Here is a drill with both verbs
ikverstajeniet
Versta je mij? - Do you understand me?
Ik versta je niet - I don't understand you
Begrijp je mij? - Do you comprehend me
Ik begrijp je niet. - I don't comprehend you
