These elections formed part of the 2013 United States elections. Before the elections, both seats were held by Republicans. Republican incumbent Chris Christie won reelection in New Jersey, while in Virginia, Democrat Terry McAuliffe won the open seat held by term-limited Republican Bob McDonnell. Both states were up for election that Barack Obama won in the 2012 presidential election. This was the first time since 1985 that Virginia and New Jersey elected governors of different parties. As of , this is the last time that a Republican won the governorship in New Jersey. Election predictions Several sites and individuals publish predictions of competitive seats. These predictions look at factors such as the strength of the incumbent (if the incumbent is running for re-election), the strength of the candidates, and the partisan leanings of the state (reflected in part by the state's Cook Partisan Voting Index rating). The predictions assign ratings to each state, with the rating indicating the predicted advantage that a party has in winning that seat. Most election predictors use: "tossup": no advantage "tilt" (used by some predictors): advantage that is not quite as strong as "lean" "lean": slight advantage "likely": significant, but surmountable, advantage "safe" or "solid": near-certain chance of victory +StatePVI IncumbentParentheses around an incumbent's name indicates that the incumbent is retiring, possibly due to term limits.LastraceIEOct 25,2013Gubernatorial Ratings Inside Elections https://www.insideelections.com/ratings/governor/2013-14-gubernatorial-ratings-october-25-2013 www.insideelections.com SabatoOct 24,2013Larry J.
