The Cosmos' seventh year of existence saw them drop "New York" from the club name (it would be restored in 1979), move into Giants Stadium (where they would play until their dissolution in 1985), and win their second NASL championship in Pelé's final year as a professional footballer. Pelé's last match was on October 1, 1977, in front of a capacity crowd at Giants Stadium: in an exhibition match between New York and his former club Santos, Pelé appeared for both sides, playing one half for each. The Cosmos won the game 2–1.http://www.espn.com/espn/eticket/story?page=cosmos&redirected=true ESPN.com - E-Ticket: When Soccer Ruled The USA www.espn.com The Cosmos finished second in the 4-team Eastern Division and third out of 18 teams league-wide on their way to the 1977 championship. 4 Squad 1 USA GK Shep Messing 2 CAN DF Robert Iarusci 2 CAN DF Bruce Twamley 3 YUG MF Vito Dimitrijević 4 USA DF Werner Roth 5 ENG DF Keith Eddy 6 GER DF Franz Beckenbauer 7 ENG FW Tony Field 8 ENG MF Terry Garbett 9 ITA FW Giorgio Chinaglia 10 BRA FW Pelé 11 ENG FW Steve Hunt 12 USA DF Bobby Smith 14 BRA MF Nelsi Morais 15 PER MF Ramon Mifflin 16 USA FW Tony Donlic 17 SCO DF Charlie Aitken 18 YUG FW Jadranko Topić 19 TUR GK Erol Yasin 20 ENG DF Mike Dillon 21 USA FW Gary Etherington 22 RSA FW Jomo Sono 23 BRA DF Rildo 25 BRA DF Carlos Alberto 26 CAN DF Paul Hunter 28 USA MF Tommy Lang 33 USA MF Chris Agoliati 34 USA FW Roberto de Oliveira Source:http://nasljerseys.com/Rosters/Cosmos_Rosters.htm NASL New York Cosmos Rosters Results Source:http://soccerstats.us/teams/new-york-cosmos/1977/ All-time American soccer statistics | SoccerStats.us Preseason DateOpponentVenueResultAttendanceScorersMarch 11, 1977BMU Bermuda U23A0–4626Chinaglia (4)March 13, 1977BMU BermudaA0–13,769ChinagliaMarch 19, 1977SUI XamaxA1–03,000March 20, 1977SUI ZürichA3–17,000ChinagliaMarch 24, 1977ITA LazioA1–220,000Chinaglia, N/AApril 2, 1977HAI VictoryH9–07,212Chinaglia (5), Field, Garbett, Pelé (2)April 3, 1977USA Tampa Bay RowdiesH2–111,098Chinaglia, Dimitrijevic Regular season Pld = Games Played, W = Wins, L = Losses, GF = Goals For, GA = Goals Against, Pts = Points 6 points for a win, 1 point for a shootout win, 0 points for a loss, 1 point for each goal scored (up to three per game).
