Benfica competed domestically in the Primeira Liga and the Taça de Portugal (Portuguese Cup), but did not take part in European football due to their league finish in the previous season. Expectations were high with head coach Toni, who had been part of Benfica's wins in 1988–89 and 1993–94, starting his third complete season with the team. In the transfer market, the club shipped out regular starters from the past seasons and brought in new players, mixing the experience of Zlatko Zahovič and Ljubinko Drulović with acquisitions Pedro Mantorras and Simão Sabrosa. By December the team was still in the title race after seven wins and seven draws. However, that month the team suffered its first defeat, a close draw against Sporting, and their exit from the Taça de Portugal. These setbacks caused Toni to resign and be replaced by his assistant, Jesualdo Ferreira. After the change, Ferreira guided the team to third-place by late March, where several injuries in key players impacted their momentum. They finished the season with 17 wins, twelve draws and five losses, putting them in fourth place and keeping them out of the European league for another year. Season summary Pre-season After the worst season since the start of the Primeira Liga, Benfica made significant changes, starting with bringing in former president of Futebol Clube de Alverca Luís Filipe Vieira to run all football-related affairs.Toni elogia Luís Filipe Vieira Toni complements Luís Filipe Vieira http://www.record.xl.pt/Futebol/Nacional/1a_liga/Benfica/interior.aspx?content_id=84505 https://web.archive.org/web/20150723003033/http://www.record.xl.pt/Futebol/Nacional/1a_liga/Benfica/interior.aspx?content_id=84505 2015-07-23 Record 20 May 2001 Portuguese One of his first decisions was transferring players deemed surplus to the new project,Manuel Vilarinho: "Luís Filipe Vieira tem mais experiência no futebol" Luís Filipe Vieira has more experience in football http://www.record.xl.pt/Futebol/Nacional/1a_liga/Benfica/interior.aspx?content_id=94136 https://web.archive.org/web/20150723011634/http://www.record.xl.pt/Futebol/Nacional/1a_liga/Benfica/interior.aspx?content_id=94136 2015-07-23 Record 29 July 2001 Portuguese including Serhiy Kandaurov, Ronaldo Guiaro, José Calado, and both strikers of the previous season, Pierre van Hooijdonk and João Tomás.Van Hooijdonk, Maniche, Sabry, Dudic e Bossio dispensados Van Hooijdonk, Maniche, Sabry, Dudic and Bossio released http://www.record.xl.pt/Futebol/Nacional/1a_liga/Benfica/interior.aspx?content_id=91207 https://web.archive.org/web/20150722231203/http://www.record.xl.pt/Futebol/Nacional/1a_liga/Benfica/interior.aspx?content_id=91207 2015-07-22 Record 5 July 2001 Portuguese Argel Fucks, Ljubinko Drulović and Zlatko Zahovič, all players who gained notability at Porto, were added to the team,Os reforços do Benfica Benfica new signings http://www.record.xl.pt/opiniao/interior.aspx?content_id=91330 https://web.archive.org/web/20150722232819/http://www.record.xl.pt/opiniao/interior.aspx?content_id=91330 2015-07-22 Record 6 July 2001 Portuguese along with the highly expected Pedro Mantorras and Simão Sabrosa, the latter costing a record 12 million Euros.https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/025a-0eaa6f258be5-d94397400180-1000--miccoli-to-lead-benfica-line/ Miccoli to lead Benfica line UEFA 31 August 2005 6 January 2010Mais uma enchente na Luz para ver Simão e Mantorras Another crowd to see Simão and Mantorras http://www.record.xl.pt/Futebol/Nacional/1a_liga/Benfica/interior.aspx?content_id=94426 https://web.archive.org/web/20150723014834/http://www.record.xl.pt/Futebol/Nacional/1a_liga/Benfica/interior.aspx?content_id=94426 2015-07-23 Record 1 August 2001 Portuguese With Simão's signing, Filipe Vieira stated, "Now we have a dream-team".Luís Filipe Vieira sobre o Benfica: "Agora temos equipa-maravilha" O Jogo 27 July 2001 http://www.diariodigital.pt/print.asp?id_news=1690 http://arquivo.pt/wayback/20010727145936/http://www.diariodigital.pt/print.asp?id_news=1690 dead 27 July 2001 16 February 2016 Luís Filipe Vieira: "Now we have a dream-team" Portuguese The pre-season started on 5 July in Lisbon, followed by four games in Nyon, Switzerland, beginning 14 July.
