Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis won the 1988 Democratic nomination for President of the United States, and chose Texas Senator Lloyd Bentsen as his running mate. The choice of Bentsen caused some backlash from Jesse Jackson, who had wanted to be chosen as the vice presidential nominee, and progressives such as Ralph Nader.Staff writer Dukakis Chooses Texas Sen. Bentsen as Running Mate https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/23/AR2006052300780.html October 4, 2015 Washington Post July 13, 1988 Paul Brountas, a longtime Dukakis aide, led the search for Dukakis's running mate. The Dukakis–Bentsen ticket ultimately lost to the Bush–Quayle ticket in the general election.
Coincidental to the presidential election, Bentsen simultaneously re-elected to the fourth term as Senator, and easily won, despite the Dukakis-Bentsen ticket's double-digit loss in Texas. At the convention, Dukakis openly cast the ticket as a 1960-style pairing—“another man from Massachusetts” joined with a Texan—prompting contemporaneous press to liken it to the Kennedy-Johnson “Boston-Austin” alliance.1988-07-19 TED KENNEDY NO REGRETS AS THE TORCH IS PASSED https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/1988/07/19/ted-kennedy-no-regrets-as-the-torch-is-passed/a9fd49af-a428-47d2-bac0-3706f03b47a4/ 2025-09-29 The Washington Post en-US 0190-82861988-07-13 POLITICS '88 : Choice of Bentsen a Pragmatic Gamble That May Sow Discord https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1988-07-13-mn-5731-story.html 2025-09-29 Los Angeles Times en-US
