The lobby of the building tapers outwards from its footprint in order to increase its visual separation from the adjacent Grand Central Terminal, and is defined by a web of interlaced steel columns which fan from several points at ground level, limited by the presence of rail infrastructure below the site. These columns are clad in a painted metal finish and continue for the height of the building.1,646-Foot-Tall Project Commodore Deemed Appropriate By LPC, At 175 Park Avenue In Midtown East, Manhattan Young Michael February 25, 2021 https://newyorkyimby.com/2021/02/new-renderings-highlight-approved-1646-foot-tall-project-commodore-at-175-park-avenue-in-midtown-east.html New York YIMBY June 7, 2024 June 7, 2024 https://web.archive.org/web/20240607054136/https://newyorkyimby.com/2021/02/new-renderings-highlight-approved-1646-foot-tall-project-commodore-at-175-park-avenue-in-midtown-east.html live The tower is interspersed with outdoor terraces and culminates at a lattice crown, where the exterior columns again interlace echoing the design of the lobby facade. The inverted tapering of the building's base allows for an approximately 24,000 ft2 on elevated public terrace designed by James Corner Field Operations, wrapping around the building's base and accessible by stair and elevators from 42nd Street.
As first proposed in February 2021, the design called for four intermediate terraces, each framed by expressed parallel struts. By the time of its approval in December 2021, images released by RXR Realty revealed a revised design. The revised plan calls for three intermediate terrace levels and a reduced number of exterior columns, now offset at each terrace level by diagonal struts;175 Park Avenue’s 1,575-Foot-Tall Design Gains Approval In Midtown East, Manhattan Young Michael December 31, 2021 https://newyorkyimby.com/2021/12/175-park-avenues-1575-foot-tall-design-gains-approval-in-midtown-east-manhattan.html New York YIMBY June 7, 2024 March 19, 2024 https://web.archive.org/web/20240319003052/https://newyorkyimby.com/2021/12/175-park-avenues-1575-foot-tall-design-gains-approval-in-midtown-east-manhattan.html live these terraces span about 24000 ft2.Walsh Niall Patrick Permits filed for SOM's supertall Manhattan skyscraper with steel lattice structure https://archinect.com/news/article/150542348/permits-filed-for-som-s-supertall-manhattan-skyscraper-with-steel-lattice-structure 2026-10-10 ArchinectChaudhary Isha 2026-04-14 175 Park Avenue by SOM as New York's Next Supertall Skyscraper https://parametric-architecture.com/175-park-avenue-new-york-skyscraper/ 2026-10-10 Parametric Architecture - Architecture News and Computational Design The design was intended to allude to the nearby Chrysler Building and Socony-Mobil Building.Walsh Niall Patrick Permits filed for SOM's supertall Manhattan skyscraper with steel lattice structure Archinect 2026-05-12 https://archinect.com/news/article/150542348/permits-filed-for-som-s-supertall-manhattan-skyscraper-with-steel-lattice-structure 2026-05-13 The terraces are not planned to include any restrooms, despite a shortage of public toilets in New York City.Hu Winnie 2026-10-10 A New Tower Will Have Lots of Public Space but No Public Bathrooms https://www.nytimes.com/2026/10/10/nyregion/public-bathrooms-private-spaces-nyc.html 2026-10-10 The New York Times en-US 0362-4331
