1990–91 Tottenham Hotspur F.C. season

English football club season March 2015 March 2015 Tottenham Hotspur 1990–91 Terry Venables Irving Scholar White Hart Lane First Division 10th FA Cup Winners League Cup Quarter-final Gary Lineker(13) Gary LinekerPaul Gascoigne(19 each) _bluestriped_sides _whitesides _navytop 003366 _ ffd700 ffd700 ffd700 ffd700 ffd700 1989–90 1991–92 The 1990–91 season is the 109th season in existence of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, and their 13th consecutive season in the top flight of English football. In addition to the domestic league, the club participated in the FA Cup and the Football League Cup. Entering the 1990–91 season, Terry Venables stayed on as manager for his fourth season in charge of Tottenham with the team ending in tenth position. They won a record eighth FA Cup, beating Nottingham Forest in the final and they got knocked out in the quarter-finals of the Football League Cup by Chelsea. Season summary Tottenham's league form was average at best: having stood in third place after 17 games, the club won only three of their next 21 league matches,http://www.statto.com/football/teams/tottenham-hotspur/1990-1991 Tottenham Hotspur Home Page for the 1990-1991 season Statto.com 2016-07-19 https://web.archive.org/web/20160304063841/http://www.statto.com/football/teams/tottenham-hotspur/1990-1991 4 March 2016 live dmy-all slumping to tenth place in the final table. The club had better luck in the FA Cup: after defeating London arch-rivals (and that season's eventual champions) Arsenal in the semi-final, they defeated Nottingham Forest 2–1 in the final. As well as giving Tottenham their first post-Heysel European campaign (in the Cup Winners' Cup) and ending the club's seven-year trophy drought, the FA Cup win made Tottenham the first club to win the trophy eight times, although this record has since been surpassed by Arsenal and Manchester United. The only downside of the FA Cup triumph was an injury to star midfielder Paul Gascoigne, who ruptured his cruciate ligaments in a tackle on Forest fullback Gary Charles early in the first half. The injury would put his transfer to Italian side Lazio on hold until the 1992–93 season. Gascoigne had earlier scored a tremendous free-kick in the 3–1 win against Arsenal in the semi-final (Gary Lineker scored Tottenham's other goals, with Arsenal's Alan Smith scoring Arsenal's goal). Off the pitch the club were in danger of going into administration. With £20 million of debt (around £45 million equivalent in 2020) and shares in Tottenham Hotspur being suspended in the autumn of 1990, Irving Scholar resigned as chairman of the club. In June 1991, manager Terry Venables and businessman, Alan Sugar, took over the club with equal shares and Alan Sugar being made chairman. https://talksport.com/football/231375/thanks-memories-no-tears-white-hart-lane-demolition-lessons-history-tottenham-chief-daniel/ Thanks for the memories, but no tears for White Hart Lane demolition… lessons from history for Tottenham chief Daniel Levy Talksport Tom Bellwood 12 May 2017 16 March 2021https://twohundredpercent.net/100-owners-number-81-irving-scholar-tottenham-hotspur-nottingham-forest/amp/ 100 Owners: Number 81 – Irving Scholar (Tottenham Hotspur & Nottingham Forest) Squad Squad at end of seasonhttps://www.worldfootball.net/teams/te1924/tottenham-hotspur/squad/ Tottenham Hotspur » Squad 1990/1991 Worldfootball.net 2016-07-19http://www.11v11.com/teams/tottenham-hotspur/tab/players/season/1991 All Tottenham Hotspur players: 1991 11v11.com 2016-07-19 First-team squad yes yes ENG GK Kevin Dearden yes ENG GK Ian Walker yes NOR GK Erik Thorstvedt yes ENG DF Justin Edinburgh yes ENG DF Ian Hendon yes ENG DF Terry Fenwick yes ENG DF Gary Mabbutt captain yes ENG DF Mitchell Thomas yes ENG DF Dave Tuttle yes WAL DF Pat Van Den Hauwe yes IRL DF David McDonald yes ISL DF Guðni Bergsson yes ENG MF Paul Allen yes ENG MF Peter Garland yes ENG MF Paul Gascoigne yes yes ENG MF Danny Hill yes ENG MF Scott Houghton yes ENG MF David Howells yes ENG MF John Moncur yes ENG MF Vinny Samways yes ENG MF Mark Robson yes ENG MF Steve Sedgley yes ENG MF Paul Stewart yes ESP MF Nayim yes ENG FW Gary Lineker yes ENG FW Paul Moran yes ENG FW Paul Walsh yes SCO FW John Hendry yes NIR FW Phil Gray Reserve squad yes yes ENG DF Neil Smith yes ENG MF Nick Barmby yes yes ENG FW Ollie Morah Transfers Loans out Date fromPositionNationalityPlayerToDate untilRef.24 August 1990GKENGKevin DeardenENG Peterborough United24 October 1990March 202531 August 1990GKENGIan WalkerENG Oxford United15 November 1990Ian Walker Football Stats No Club Age 52 1989-2008 Soccer Base https://www.soccerbase.com/players/player.sd?player_id=8234 2024-04-10 www.soccerbase.com27 September 1990DFIREDavid McDonaldENG Gillingham31 May 199125 October 1990DFENGTerry FenwickENG Leicester City24 December 19901990-10-26 Terry Fenwick - Leicester Loan https://www.newspapers.com/article/leicester-mercury-terry-fenwick-leices/145103446/ 2024-04-10 Leicester Mercury 6816 November 1990GKENGIan WalkerENG Ipswich TownMay 19911990-11-16 Ian Walker loaned to Ipswich Town https://www.newspapers.com/article/western-daily-press-ian-walker-loaned-to/145105362/ 2024-04-10 Western Daily Press 31November 1990FWNIRPhil GrayENG FulhamDecember 1990March 2025November 1990DFIREChris HughtonENG West Ham UnitedDecember 1990March 202510 January 1991GKENGKevin DeardenENG Hull City10 February 19911991-01-12 Kevin Dearden Hull City Loan https://www.newspapers.com/article/hull-daily-mail-kevin-dearden-hull-city/145104693/ 2024-04-10 Hull Daily Mail 4328 March 1991DFENGBrian StathamENG Reading1 July 19911991-03-29 Brian Statham and Matt Edwards Loan to Reading https://www.newspapers.com/article/reading-evening-post-brian-statham-and-m/145104357/ 2024-04-10 Reading Evening Post 24 Transfers in Date fromPositionNationalityNameFromFeeRef.1 July 1990DFENGJustin EdinburghENG Southend United£150,000Orient Leyton Leyton Orient https://leytonorient.com/ 2024-04-10 Leyton Orient31 July 1990FWSCOJohn HendrySCO Dundee£50,000John HENDRY - League appearances. - Tottenham Hotspur FC http://www.sporting-heroes.net/ 2024-04-10 Sporting Heroes Transfers out Date fromPositionNationalityNameToFeeRef.24 July 1990DFENGJohn PolstonENG Norwich City£300,000Premier League icons: John Polston https://www.canaries.co.uk/content/premier-league-icons-john-polston 2024-04-10 Norwich City en28 September 1990DFENGGuy ButtersENG Portsmouth£375,000Guy BUTTERS - Brief biography of his Spurs career. - Tottenham Hotspur FC http://www.sporting-heroes.net/ 2023-04-24 Sporting Heroes22 December 1990GKENGBobby MimmsENG Blackburn Rovers£250,000Bobby Mimms - 1987/88-1990/91 - Tottenham Hotspur FC http://www.sporting-heroes.net/ 2023-04-25 Sporting Heroes31 December 1990DFIREChris HughtonENG West Ham UnitedFree transfer1991-01-01 Article clipped from The Guardian https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-guardian/59479596/ 2024-04-10 The Guardian 18 Overall transfer activity Expenditure Total: £200,000 Income Total: £925,000 Net totals Total: £725,000 Kit The FA Cup final saw Tottenham debut a longer style of shorts as part of their kit.
